Seeding delays reported in Alberta

Farmers have been experiencing some rain delays, but seeding is still ahead of the five-year average of 59 per cent complete.

Alberta's latest crop report shows provincially 73 per cent of the 2025 crop is now in the ground. 

The South is furthest ahead at 87 per cent seeded, followed by the Central, North West, and North East regions. The Peace Region is now at  61 per cent seeded up from 27 per cent last week.

Thinking of cooling off outside Airdrie? Better do it fast

With daytime highs expected to reach 29 C by Thursday, spray park access may be in high demand. In Airdrie, the taps are already flowing. Chinook Winds Spray Park opened for the season last Friday, offering 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. access seven days a week. It remains one of just two spray parks currently operating near Airdrie.

Alberta invests $9.3 million in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit

Alberta's livestock producers will benefit from increased funding for the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit. 

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson says the government is investing $9.5 million over three years, with $3.5 million being allotted each year. The funding is earmarked for the continued development of a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Calgary. 

He says the province has been supporting this project since 2020 and has been closely monitoring its impact as it continues to grow. 

Alberta's Smith calls three byelections where NDP leader, separatist leader to run

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has called three byelections to take place on June 23.

The three vacant ridings are Edmonton-Strathcona, Edmonton-Ellerslie and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi will run in Edmonton-Strathcona, which became vacant when former premier Rachel Notley resigned her seat late last year. It'll be Nenshi's first chance at getting a seat in the legislature since taking over the party reins last summer.

'Too good to be true': RCMP warn of summer paving scams

Olds RCMP have issued a warning to property owners about fraudulent asphalt-paving contractors offering discount driveway and parking lot services, then disappearing after collecting payment.

The advisory, distributed by the Town of Olds on behalf of the detachment, states that "past incidents have involved illegitimate, out-of-town companies operating in smaller towns and rural residences." According to the release, contractors often claim to have leftover materials from previous jobs and offer reduced rates.

Modular classrooms coming to Airdrie

On April 17, Rocky View Schools received provincial approval for five new modular classrooms and the relocation of a washroom unit.

According to RVS, to maximize efficiency, achieve the greatest cost savings and ensure these important student spaces are placed where they are most needed, the Board approved submitting a request to the government for amendments to the planned locations of these modular classrooms.

Affordable housing project continues in Airdrie

Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta held a fundraising event yesterday and the rest of this week in the Bayview neighbourhood to mark the continuation of construction on 11 new affordable homes in Airdrie.

The nonprofit group, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, aims to unite the neighbourhood and support families in achieving affordability and self-sufficiency through affordable homeownership.

Jennifer Dumanovski named Summit Trails High School Valedictorian

Summit Trails Online High School's Valedictorian this year is Jennifer Dumanovski.

She is excited to garner the role and was not expecting it at all.

"I wasn't even thinking of applying until my guidance counsellor brought it up and asked why I didn't apply, as I had high enough grades."

Dumanovski explained that she had to fill out a form, get a letter of recommendation from a teacher and write an essay on why she thought she was suitable for the role.
