UPDATE: Hazardous highway conditions and collision in Airdrie

Snow, ice, and slush have created dangerous driving conditions in and around Airdrie on Wednesday morning, leading to collisions and travel delays.

Emergency crews responded to a crash on Edmonton Trail near Third Avenue. Airdrie Fire and EMS were on scene, but there were no immediate details on injuries or the number of vehicles involved. The scene is now clear.

Stoney Trail N.W. was closed southbound from Crowchild Trail and Scenic Acres View N.W. to Nose Hill Drive. An early morning fatal vehicle collision led to the road closure for an investigation.

Tribunal rejects Rocky View man’s damages claim against AltaLink

Alberta’s Land and Property Rights Tribunal has dismissed a Rocky View County man’s bid to reopen a damages claim against AltaLink.

The Tribunal said Vern Bretin had no legal right to the land when the alleged tree removal occurred in 2014, and therefore no standing to seek compensation under Alberta’s Surface Rights Act.

"The Applicant has not established any of the basic requirements for review," the Tribunal wrote in its decision, released March 25.

Update: Jack-knifed semi jams northbound QEII near Carstairs amid April snow dump

A jack-knifed semi-trailer that was blocking the northbound QEII just south of the Highway 581 junction, southeast of Carstairs, has been cleared. 

The incident was reported shortly after 7:00 a.m., according to 511 Alberta. Southbound traffic had already been affected earlier in the morning when a semi spun out near Township Road 310, northeast of Carstairs. That crash was cleared by 6:54 a.m., but one lane was closed while emergency crews responded.

Calving season going well in Saskatchewan as snow melts and producers prepare

With the weather warming and spring coming to the prairies, producers have been going through calving season with plenty of work for them. 

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan Vice-President Chris Procyk says that, from what he's heard, it's been a decent season in the province.

The City of Airdrie did not renew its contract with APARC as, according to them, they are shifting to a new service model (yet to be announced).

Alberta Health Services halts plan to reduce patient food, drinks after pushback

The head of Alberta Health Services says the agency is halting a proposed food-reduction policy after public outcry over patients potentially being cut off from snacks and drinks.

The agency's interim president and CEO, Andre Tremblay, said the policy was set to go into effect Tuesday to change how food is stored and delivered in an effort to reduce waste -- not to deprive patients of food.

Snowfall warning lifted, but Airdrie motorists should prepare for winter drive

Highway conditions in and around Airdrie remained treacherous on Wednesday morning, with snow, ice, and zero visibility reported across multiple routes. 

According to 511 Alberta, Highway 2 is partly covered in snow south toward Calgary and north past the Highway 2A junction, with shoulder ice, icy sections, slush, and limited visibility reported.

New Calgary arena reaches key construction milestone

Last week, Scotia Place released another construction update video, announcing that the project has achieved a major milestone.

According to the update, the final construction pile is now in place. There are around 1100 piles for the project, with the first one installed on September 6.

The update shared that 150 of the piles are foundation piles, while the rest support shoring walls during excavation and construction.
