The Conservatives are pushing for a "three strikes" law to deny bail to repeat offenders and tougher sanctions for domestic violence.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre made crime a central focus of his election campaign in the spring, and on Thursday he brought that message to the House of Commons.
The Conservatives brought forward a motion calling on the government to introduce what they call a "three-strikes-and-you're-out" law to prevent people convicted of three "serious" offences from getting bail, probation, parole or house arrest.
Five charged in Alberta poaching investigations, including American fugitive
Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services has charged five individuals following extensive investigations into poaching and illegal trafficking.
Among those charged is an American fugitive who had been living in Alberta. The accused are Simon Paul of Montana, Teresa Snow and Eli Snow of Morley, Alberta, and James Brittain and Sophia Soriano of Calgary. Officials said they face a combined 34 charges under Alberta’s Wildlife Act and nine charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Alberta’s late-summer heat wave wasn’t just hot weather
Environment and Climate Change Canada says human-caused climate change made a late-August heat wave in Alberta far more likely.
In a Sept. 17 news release, the department said its Rapid Extreme Weather Event Attribution system analyzed 10 of the hottest heat waves across Canada in July and August 2025. Nine were found to be at least two to 10 times more likely to occur because of climate change.
The Alberta event ran from Aug. 25 to Aug. 31, with a peak daily high temperature of 28.8 °C and an anomaly of 9.3 °C above normal.
Update: Collision closes stretch of Highway 9 east of Balzac
A stretch of Highway 9 has reopened after being closed for several hours overnight due to a motor vehicle collision near Highway 566 east of Balzac.
511 Alberta first reported the crash just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, saying the highway was shut in both directions and emergency crews were on scene.
Nose Creek Elementary School receives $750 for leadership program
Yesterday, Nose Creek Elementary School received a $750 donation that will be used to help out their leadership program.
Andrew Doyle, the principal at the school, explained that they received the donation from Davis Chevrolet GMC Buick.
"We were thrilled to accept and put towards some of our student leadership programs."
Ron Ebbesen upgrades set for mid-October completion
Renovations at the Ron Ebbesen Arena are progressing with the hockey season getting underway.
Brad Anderson, the manager of recreation with the City of Airdrie, shared that everything is still on schedule to be completed on time.
"The construction started in the spring, and we're on time with our original schedule to have Ron Ebensen Arena open again by mid-October."
He explained that the reason why renovations are being done is because of the age of the facility.
Airdrie athletes honoured at Special Olympics ceremony
Over the weekend, the Special Olympics Airdrie held its awards ceremony, with its busy season now over.
Susan Farkas-Fillatre, Media Relations Coordinator with Special Olympics Airdrie, explained that it was a fun award ceremony.
"Super excited for all our athletes who worked so hard this past year. And of course, so happy for all the athletes who win awards this year."
