Big rigs and transformers wow kids at Airdrie Public Library

The Airdrie Public Library's (APL) Mighty Machines event was once again a hit on Sunday.

Tanya Pike, the children and teen coordinator for the APL, was excited to see plenty of Airdronians enjoy the free event.

"This event is a strong example of how the library goes beyond books. It brings people together, it builds partnerships and sparks discovery."

According to Pike, almost 2400 Airdronians visited the event as it showcased all kinds of large vehicles that kids love to see daily, whether that's city services vehicles, fire trucks, tow trucks or even tractors.

Sunday evening supercell brings rain, strong winds and hail

A storm that moved through the Airdrie area Sunday evening left its mark in several spots.

Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said the storm developed in the foothills before quickly moving toward Airdrie and Calgary.

"We saw a storm that formed in the foothills, then it moved pretty quickly towards the Airdrie and Calgary region," she said.

The system travelled at about 50 to 60 kilometres per hour and brought hail to parts of north Calgary.

Calgary Stampede just missed out on attendance record

The Calgary Stampede fell short this year of breaking its attendance record.

Event organizers say this year’s final attendance reached 1,470,288, with 121,704 visitors passing through the gates on the final Sunday of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

That total makes this year’s 10-day event the second highest on record, just behind 2024’s attendance of 1,477,953.

When it comes to the rodeo events, here is a list of the winners:

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to convene the Incident Response Group in Ottawa today to discuss the ongoing wildfire situation across the country.

More than 6,000 people are currently out of their homes in Manitoba, and the communities of Lynn Lake and Snow Lake ordered residents to flee for the second time in just weeks.

As we enter the heart of July and the back half of the 2025 growing season, producers are looking to protect their crops to help ensure they don’t lose any yield come harvest time. That’s especially the case for canola, as plants start heading towards full bloom and will start forming pods and seeds.

Poilievre wants Carney to cash out blind trust, says ethics screens insufficient

The Conservatives want Prime Minister Mark Carney to sell all the assets in his blind trust to avoid any possible conflicts of interest.

Carney set up the blind trust after he was sworn in as prime minister in March and the details of how it works were made public on Friday.

They show that the prime minister has set up screens to avoid potential conflicts related to his previous interests in Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Corporation and Stripe Inc.

But Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre believes that's not enough.

Airdrie to receive more modular classrooms

Today, Rocky View Schools (RVS) announced that the Government of Alberta approved five more modular classrooms through its in-year modular funding program.

“RVS appreciates the government’s continued commitment to addressing our overcrowded schools,” said Board Chair Fiona Gilbert. “These five additional modular classrooms to go along with the five new, plus one washroom relocation, approved earlier this spring, will help us better serve our students while we wait for new schools to be built.”
