U.S. President Joe Biden steps aside as Democratic candidate, ending re-election bid
U.S. President Joe Biden is removing his name as the Democratic candidate in the November election following weeks of mounting pressure over the 81-year-old’s mental acuity and ability to win the faceoff with Republican rival Donald Trump.
Biden says it has been his greatest honour to serve but he believes it is in the best interest of his party to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling his duties as president for the rest of his term.
SPSA gives outlook on wildfire season with 75 active wildfires currently raging
With wildfire season going strong on the prairies, southeast residents already got a taste of smoke at the start of the week, and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is looking to keep fires down in the province.
Currently, there are 75 active wildfires in Saskatchewan. 12 of those are contained with 36 of those under assessment.
10 of the wildfires have direct property protection underway, and 17 of those are not yet contained.
RCMP receive 147 total calls for service during Country Thunder 2024
Country Thunder 2024 marked a significant milestone for the famous festival, with this year seeing the One Millionth fan come through the gates. Both famous and infamous for its rowdy party scene, the weekend saw Saskatchewan RCMP officers respond to a total of 147 calls for service.
Calls for service attributed to the influx of people in the area were tracked between Wednesday, July 10 and Monday, July 15. The calls resulted in 33 people taken into custody and six charges laid under Canada's Criminal Code.
Food, shelter costs rise as Saskatchewan inflation remains unchanged
The latest inflation data was released by Statistics Canada Tuesday morning.
The numbers showed the overall consumer rate index in Saskatchewan, or CPI held steady in June at 1.43 percent. While the overall number remained unchanged from the previous month, some numbers did have changes. Some of the biggest changes outside of the energy sector came with food and shelter, which were up 3.68 percent and 3.72 percent respectively.
11,000 provincial workers receive retroactive pay increases, enhancements in new contract
After two years of bargaining between the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union and the province, a new contract has been voted on and has passed.
The deal had been introduced back in the spring after an impasse was declared in February between the two sides.

Temperature records broken in Saskatchewan on Thursday
More temperature records in northern Saskatchewan were broken on Thursday, July 18.
Six new records were established in the communities in Key Lake (32.7), La Ronge (32.6), Meadow Lake (32.6), Waskesiu Lake (32.3) and Uranium City (32).
As of Friday morning, Humboldt remained outside of the heat warning, but that will likely change at some point during the weekend, with temperature expected to climb over 30 degrees.
Beckett Hamilton selected to National U17 Development Camp
80 players have been selected to attend Hockey Canada’s national U17 development camp, which is being held at Joshua’s Creek Arena in Oakville, Ontario.
One of the players selected is Humboldt’s Beckett Hamilton.
Last season, Hamilton spent most of the 2023-24 campaign with the U18 AAA Warman Wildcats, ending the year with 54 points (21G-33A) in 44 games.
