SPSA update indicates precipitation has helped tackle the Shoe Fire, four communities remain under evacuation order

In the latest update from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, there are currently 19 active wildfires in the province. Of those active fires, one is categorized as contained, five are not contained, 11 are ongoing assessment, and two are listed as protecting values.    

Four communities remain under evacuation orders, including East Trout Lake, as well as priority individuals from Creighton, Denare Beach and Cumberland House. The SPSA Recovery Task Team has started to meet with community leaders to review and discuss recovery efforts.  

Crime bill with tougher bail, sentencing provisions coming in fall: justice minister

The Liberal government will table a bill this fall introducing stricter bail conditions and sentencing for some crimes, particularly those involving organized crime, human trafficking, home invasion and car theft, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said in an interview.

"It's perhaps obvious, given the tenor around the criminal justice system, that reforms are in order," Fraser told The Canadian Press.

Meat producers warn internal trade bill could cause blowback with trade partners

The Canadian Meat Council is warning that the Liberal government’s legislation to ease the movement of goods and services within Canada could actually undermine red meat exports.

Lauren Martin, senior director of public affairs for the organization, says the bill is raising questions about whether it could lead the federal government to recognize provincial rules for inspecting meat processing facilities as equal to federal standards.

Former Broncos Equipment Manager "Chico" Dhanjal wins Calder Cup championship with Abbotsford

A former equipment manager of the Humboldt Broncos has added another championship to his résumé.  

Ramandeep “Chico” Dhanjal was on the bench with the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League (AHL) as they claimed the Calder Cup defeating the Charlotte Checkers in a thrilling six-game series on Monday night.  

Classroom of the Month: June 2025

The school year is winding down and we had one last delivery for Classroom of the Month!

The winners for June were at Bruno. We surprised the grade 1/2 classroom with a pizza lunch! 

The nomination stated:

"Mrs. D goes completely above and beyond for her class!! Teaching all those students the fundamentals of reading and writing. And also leading the school's Yes Team, which supports our school's milk program and soup kitchen!"

City Council wrestles with concerns over proposed liquor store

Humboldt City Council contended with a discretionary use permit for a new liquor outlet, as it acknowledged that not all residents within its immediate area are happy with the notion. 

At the regular council meeting on Monday, June 23, Council addressed an application for the operation of a liquor store in two eastern most units of Humboldt Commons on 8th Avenue. The immediate business district already houses a vape store, a cannabis store and a hotel with an off-sale liquor outlet. 

Artist Tyler Dies brings symbolic sculpture to life at Original Humboldt

The public was invited to a walking visit at the Original Humboldt site just west of the city on Monday, June 23 to see, for the first time, an intricate and evocative large scale metal sculpture created by local artist Tyler Dies.  

The sculpture rests on top of a small knoll at the site as a last tribute to the land, all people who settled on it, and the spirit of Reconciliation that is ongoing in the country.
