To help celebrate the end of another school year, Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) recently recognized the achievements of its students, in academics, sports and other award winners.

Sagehill Community Futures holds 39th Annual General Meeting

Sagehill Community Futures held its 39th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday evening, June 26 at the Humboldt Legion Hall. Members attended for supper, the reports and business meeting, plus guest speaker Jessica Rorison who talked about her experience with the organization.  

Executive Director Susan Wehage welcomed attendees to the proceedings and hinted at the exciting announcements coming later in the evening.  

Coach Scott Barney is advancing to the next stage of his career

 

After six seasons at the helm of the Humboldt Broncos, Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney is advancing to the next stage of his career, as the Head Coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Sudbury Wolves.

Barney began his Humboldt Broncos’ journey as the Assistant Coach following the Broncos bus tragedy, then was promoted to Interim Head Coach following a coaching change midway through the 2018-19 season. He went on to lead the Broncos to a 14-6-1 record to finish the season, after which then Interim tag was lifted.

HCI's Caleb Irwin awarded top Canadian STEM scholarship

Caleb Irwin has been an outstanding academic student at HCI through his studies there. The hard work has paid off for the 2024 grad with the receipt of a Schulich Leader Scholarship worth $100,000 to study computer science at the University of Toronto. 

Irwin will be entering the Computer Science program this Fall. Irwin was selected by Mr. David Millette for his outstanding academic achievements. This is the 5th Nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at Humboldt Collegiate Institute. 

The East Central AAA 18U Red Sox suffer a 4-2 loss to the Sask Five Marlins

The East Central AAA 18U Red Sox suffered a 4-2 loss to the Sask Five Marlins last night in SPBL action. 

The Marlins struck first with a double by Willis Simair for the opening run.  

Kacen Hyra returned the favour for the Red Sox with a single RBI in the top of the third. In the bottom of the same inning, Simair smacked a triple for another pair followed by a Rhett Anderson sacrifice fly to take it to 4-1 for the Marlins.  

Saskatchewan's 2024 OYF Winners Cyle and Erica Stewart

Cyle and Erica Stewart from Pine Ranch at Morse have been named Saskatchewan's 2024 Outstanding Young Farmers.

The pair run a commercial cow/calf operation and grass yearlings in the Coteau Hill and have been dealing with a severe drought for the last seven years.

The couple are constantly looking at ways to learn and improve their production practices from soil health to cattle nutrition and low stress handling.

Midway Co-op Supports Watson Fire Department with Community BBQ

The Watson community recently gathered at the Watson Midway Co-op location for a special event aimed at supporting their local fire department. The event, which featured a barbecue and the distribution of equity checks, was a resounding success. Glenn Thacyk, the Fire Chief of Watson, expressed his gratitude towards the Co-op for their support and highlighted the importance of the fundraiser for ongoing fire department projects.

The aftermath of Sunday's storm still being calculated

Summer in Saskatchewan usually comes with unpredictable weather, and that was evident on Sunday.   

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg explains that tornado activity occurred near Martensville and close to Melfort. He added that they will conduct a follow-up investigation to analyze the exact damage from the storm.  

There have been reports of a tornado touchdown in the RM of Bayne near Bruno.
