New Commanding Officer appointed for Alberta RCMP
The Alberta RCMP is set to welcome new leadership as Assistant Commissioner Trevor Daroux steps into the role of Commanding Officer, following the retirement of Deputy Commissioner Rob Hill.
With more than 36 years of policing experience, Assistant Commissioner Daroux brings a deep knowledge of law enforcement and community safety to the position. He served extensively with both the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP, including time as Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Community Policing in Calgary before joining the RCMP in 2017.
Rocky View students ready to face off in Battle of the Books
Rocky View Schools (RVS) students are sharpening their pencils and diving into their reading lists as they prepare for the annual Battle of the Books competition, a high-energy literacy event that brings students together through their love of reading.
The fun begins April 11 with a virtual competition for elementary students across the division. Then on May 7, middle school teams will gather in-person at the RVS Education Centre in Airdrie for their chance to be crowned Battle of the Books champions.
Cochrane players gear up for WHL second round
Cochrane hockey players will see action in the second round of the WHL playoffs, which kick off in Calgary on April 10.
On Tuesday night, the Prince Albert Raiders stormed back from a 3-1 series deficit in front of a sold-out home crowd to eliminate the Edmonton Oil Kings. While no dates have been confirmed for the upcoming series, they are expected to be released shortly.
Cochrane's Riley Boychuk played in all seven games for the Raiders, recording one goal, two assists, and a +1 rating.
Melodies of Hope to support Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre
The Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre is gearing up for a night of music, community, and compassion with its upcoming Melodies of Hope fundraiser.
The event, featuring a live performance by the New West Symphony and Chorus, will help support the centre’s vital programs and services for the year ahead.

Alberta moves to restrict public boards' power to police trustees, councilors
The Alberta United Conservative government introduced two bills Tuesday to reduce the self-policing powers of elected public school boards and municipal councils.
One bill, if passed, would cancel local councils' codes of conduct and put an end to any ongoing complaints or sanctions that aren’t before the courts.
Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver, before introducing the legislation, told reporters that in some cases, codes of conduct had been weaponized to silence dissent on municipal councils.
Alberta measles outbreak not dire enough to warrant public address: health minister
Health Minister Adriana LaGrange says Alberta's measles outbreak isn't dire enough for the province's top public health doctor to address the public, despite mounting calls for the government to do more to stop the spread.
Alberta Health Services announced seven new cases of the highly infectious disease Tuesday, bringing the province's confirmed case total to 43 since early March. Cases have been reported in all five provincial health zones.

Spring scavenger hunt brings gold rush to Cochrane
A new community scavenger hunt kicks off this week in downtown Cochrane, with local businesses teaming up to offer a gold rush of fun.
The Spring Scavengers event, organized by Found Books & Shop, runs every Thursday for the next four weeks.
"It's a gold rush scavenger hunt," says Tupaj Parrado with Found Books. "You can go to different Main Street businesses to collect coupons and exclusive gold nuggets."
The first three people to collect and return all 11 golden nuggets to Found Books by 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays will win a $25 gift card.
New initiative hopes to boost consumer confidence for Canadian meat products
Canadian producers will have a new way to make sure they can say their product is upholding sustainability, as the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) is unveiling their participation in the Protein PACT Sustainability Framework. The initiative will look to uphold sustainability standards across the country for Canada's beef producers.
