In-river work to begin on Springbank flood mitigation project
In-river work is set to begin later this month on the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir Project (SR1) to prepare for operation of the reservoir prior to the 2025 flood season
Project officials say the work is scheduled to take place during the last two weeks of April, with an expected duration of four to seven days, depending on flow conditions in the Elbow River.
If conditions are unsafe or the weather is unfavourable, the work will be postponed and rescheduled as soon as possible.

The CobraCats girls rugby team played a tune-up match against the Croxford Cavaliers on Wednesday night in preparation for their season opener on April 15.
Spirits ran high during the game, capped off by special player-of-the-game presentations from head coach Sinead Byrne.
“Everyone’s having fun,” said Byrne. “All the positivity has been awesome, and we’re just so excited for all the new players and how well they did. They meshed with the experienced players so well for their first game. We’re very excited to see what’s going to happen.”

Cochrane’s own Kyla Lightfoot has been crowned Miss Ponoka Stampede 2025, marking her third rodeo queen title and a major milestone in her journey through Alberta’s rodeo royalty ranks.
Lightfoot, who previously held the titles of Miss Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen and Miss Airdrie Pro Rodeo Queen, was officially selected during Ponoka Stampede's one-day competition on April 7. The selection process included horsemanship challenges, impromptu questions, a personal interview, and a formal dinner with judges and board members.

AUPE officials announced the cancellation this afternoon after receiving the new offer.
Shawna Eagles, AUPE chapter chair, says that once it has been reviewed, the workers will decide whether to proceed with the rally on a future date.
Home Treasures offers up free weekend swimming
Cochrane residents looking for something to do this weekend for FREE, are in luck!
Cochrane Home Treasures is once again generously sponsoring a free public swim event at the Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Centre pool on Saturday evening.
The free event is open to everyone and anyone but pre-registration is required to ensure everyone is able to have a spot in the pool.
It runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Hawthorne Optima Living care workers rally Thursday for new contract
The 130 continuing care workers at Hawthorne Optima Living are holding a rally on Thursday, April 10, to raise awareness of their ongoing struggle to secure a new collective agreement for AUPE Local 048 Chapter 055.
Employees are encouraging residents to come out and show their support. The rally runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m., adjacent to the continuing care facility in the Fireside community.
