Revamp coming for Canada’s national pig code

Canada’s Code of Practice for Care and Handling of Pigs is up for review, a process expected to be compete by 2028

Canada’s national pig code is getting an update.

‘We’ve launched the code of practice with the National Farm Animal Care Council,” said Stephen Heckbert, executive director of the Canadian Pork Council.

The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs will be guided by the development process set out by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), the spearheading body for Canada’s various livestock codes.

Brandon Lorenzo brings country charm back to Cochrane

Airdrie singer-songwriter Brandon Lorenzo is ready to hit the ground running this summer with a full lineup of shows, including a return to a community he calls a second home: Cochrane.

Lorenzo will be the featured performer at the CochraneNow Stampede Pancake Breakfast on July 9, and says he’s looking forward to once again playing for a crowd that always shows up in full force.

“Every time we get to come out to Cochrane, it just feels really good,” Lorenzo says. “You’ve always really made me feel welcome. It honestly feels like a hometown crowd.”

Free summer entry to Banff and all national parks

Parks Canada will be waiving entry fees at all national parks, including the popular Banff National Park, from June 20 to September 2 as part of the new Canada Strong Pass initiative.

Announced June 16, the federal program, originally a campaign promise, offers free admission to all visitors at national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas managed by Parks Canada. It also includes a 25 per cent discount on camping fees.

RCMP warn of jewellery scam targeting parking lots

Alberta RCMP are warning the public about a rise in organized gold and jewellery scams happening in parking lots across the province.

The scam typically involves individuals, often posing as stranded motorists, approaching victims to ask for money. In return, they offer what appears to be valuable gold or jewellery, which later turns out to be fake. In some cases, scammers have even escorted victims to ATMs or stores to withdraw cash or buy gift cards.

Cochrane Classic Bullriding event rides Into the Sunset

Summer in Cochrane won’t be quite the same with a long-standing tradition stepping out of the ring.

After 24 years, Jason Borton has pulled the plug on the Cochrane Classic Bullriding event, which traditionally packed the grounds of the Cochrane and District Ag Society in late July.

The event's founder says the rising cost of putting on the show and mounting time constraints made it impossible to continue.

Border bill raises questions about expanded data sharing with U.S.: Citizen Lab

An organization that monitors the effect of information flows on human rights says the new federal border security bill appears to "roll out a welcome mat" for expanded data-sharing agreements with the United States and other countries.
