Maguire captures silver at nationals in wrestling comeback
It’s been a successful return to the mats this season for Cochrane Cowboys wrestler Nolan Maguire.
The 16-year-old captured silver in the male cadet 60 kg division at the National Wrestling Championships.
Mueller heading to Calder Cup championship series
The Abbotsford Canucks knocked off the Texas Stars in dramatic fashion last night to advance to the Calder Cup championship series.
Trailing 2–0 midway through the game, the Canucks stormed back with four unanswered goals—including an empty-netter—to capture the AHL Western Conference title.
Abbotsford took the series in six games. The Stars forced a return to B.C. with a 2–1 overtime win on June 5.
It marks the first time the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate has reached the league final.
Defence lawyers begin final submissions in hockey players' sex assault trial
Defence lawyers representing five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team have begun their final submissions to the judge overseeing the players' sexual assault trial.
Prosecutors will follow later this week with their submissions to Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia, who will then set a date to deliver her ruling.
Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart and Callan Foote have pleaded not guilty to sexual assault.
McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.
Aces Wild! U11 team deals another winning hand
The Cochrane Aces have done it again.
The U11 softball team captured its second tournament title of the season over the weekend, taking top honours at the Foothills Fury Classic in Okotoks.
It follows a gold-medal performance in late May at the Leduc Jets Spring Classic.

Aliyah Grund leads Bow Valley’s class of 2025
As Bow Valley High School’s Class of 2025 prepares to cross the stage on June 26, valedictorian Aliyah Grund is looking back on her high school journey with pride, gratitude, and a little surprise.
“It’s been a really good experience overall,” said Grund, who has called Cochrane home her entire life. “We’ve had some unique challenges, for sure, but I’ve always felt supported here.”
From navigating the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to dealing with school construction noise during exams, Grund says her time at Bow Valley High has been anything but ordinary.
Bike safety events return with in-school focus
Youth at three Cochrane schools received a tune-up on their bike safety skills, thanks to the continued collaboration between the Cochrane Kiwanis, Bike Cochrane, and the Town of Cochrane.
Students at Glenbow and RancheView schools took part in hands-on safety education, while those at Elizabeth Barrett received bike safety packages to prepare for a summer of riding.
Cochrane walk raises over $12K for type 1 diabetes
Cochrane's community spirit was on full display on Sunday as families, friends, and supporters gathered for the annual JDRF Breakthrough T1D Walk, raising an impressive $12,382. Among the local champions leading the charge was 13-year-old Brodie Rosene and his team, who alone brought in $2,744.
Firefighters soar to new heights in honour of Huw Jeffries
In his memory, local firefighters turned out in record numbers and reached new heights in fundraising at the 11th annual Firefighters Stairclimb Challenge in Calgary on June 8.
A team of 22 Cochrane firefighters, including town CAO Mike Derricott, took part in the climb, honouring Jeffries with every step as they ascended the 1,370 stairs of the 57-storey Brookfield Place in modified firefighting gear.
