The Liberals have won their fourth mandate this time under the leadership of leader Mark Carney.

When Mark Carney formed government as Canada's 24th Prime Minister on March 14, 2025, he selected 34-year-old Kody Blois from the Kings-Hants riding in Nova Scotia as the Federal Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Rural Economic Development.

Blois is heading back to Parliament after winning his riding last night. Expectations are that Carney could keep him in that role, but that will be determined when he announces his new cabinet in the days ahead.

Challenging the Liberals' agriculture portfolio under the Pierre Poilievre Conservatives has been 53-year-old John Barlow from the Foothills Alberta riding.

In last night's election, John Barlow retained his seat and will be heading back to Ottawa. Many producers would like to see him retain his critic portfolio, but we'll have to wait and see what happens.

While Barlow won his seat, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre lost his seat in the Ottawa Carleton riding, where he was one of 91 people on the ballot.

Poilievre had held his seat since 2004, but Liberal Bruce Fanjoy walked away with the win last night.

In his speech last night, prior to the results coming in for his riding, Poilievre talked about remaining on as official opposition leader, saying that they would do their job to hold the government to account.

Some other notable faces returning to Ottawa include Liberal Heath MacDonald, a former member of the standing committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food was re-elected in his PEI riding.

Bloc Quebecois MP Yves Perron is returning to Ottawa; he had served as the Agriculture Committee Vice-Chair.

While other Conservative MPs familiar with the agriculture file, including Luc Berthold and Liane Rood, will also be returning to Parliament Hill.

Producer groups are calling on all politicians to focus on the priorities in agriculture. Of key concern is the ongoing impact of the tariffs from the U.s. and China.
