With harvest approaching, farmers will want to start thinking about pre-harvest intervals (PHI) before applying any pesticides and or fungicides to the crop.

The PHI refers to the minimum number of days between a pesticide application and swathing or straight combining of a crop and reflects the time required for pesticides to break down after being applied.

It's important to read label directions and ensure the product being used does not exceed the Maximum Residue Limits for the crop as even small traces can impact the potential sale and movement of the crop for food use within Canada and other countries.

The Keep It Clean website has a  Pre-Harvest Glyphosate Stage Guide and a Pre-Harvest Interval Calculator to help identify the pre-harvest interval for the various crops.

Provincial crop protection guides also include the pre-harvest intervals for every pesticide by crop combination.
