The province is once again giving livestock producers on crown land the opportunity to apply for the Crown Grazing Lease Rental Reduction Program.

Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison says, given the dry conditions throughout most of the grazing season, they are once again offering the program for producers.

"Crown grazing land lessees who have reduced the number of animals grazing on the land are eligible to apply (by the October 31st deadline) for a rent reduction for the 2025 grazing season. To be eligible, the lessee must reduce their stocking rate by 20 per cent."

He notes the ministry may also authorize lessees to sublease surplus grazing and sell hay.

Saskatchewan Cattle Association Chair Chad Ross says the dry conditions in various parts of the province have made it challenging for producers.

"We appreciate that the government has recognized this and made adjustments where possible. This program will help those who have had to reduce the number of animals on their leased pastures."

A large number of livestock producers throughout the province utilize the Crown Grazing Lease Program. Last year, close to 3200 producers used the 220 pasture associations and grazing co-operatives on Crown land.

President of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association Jeff Yorga says they are pleased to see the government implementing a common sense solution during a difficult growing season.

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Bill Huber says many areas of the province are facing dry conditions, which has created difficulties for producers.

"We are happy to see the government has acknowledged these challenges and made adjustments where it can. This program will provide support to those who have been forced to cut back the number of animals on their leased pastures."

Harrison says they've had an excellent response to the program in the past, noting that this is the third year for the program.

"This program was also offered in 2023 and 2024 to support livestock producers impacted by dry conditions. Over the past two years, the program received over 800 applications and saved producers over $1.7 million in rental credits."

Applicants have until October 31 to apply for Saskatchewan's 2025 Crown Grazing Lease Rental Reduction Program.
