The province is trying to make it easier for parents to get their children vaccinated against COVID-19.

From Mar. 2 to 16, Alberta Health Service (AHS) clinics will provide vaccines for kids aged 5 to 11 on a walk-in basis. Also, beginning Mar. 2, approximately 150 pharmacies and some doctor's offices will offer the vaccine.

The children's vaccine was previously only available by appointment through select AHS clinics.

During Wednesday's (Feb.23) update, health minister Jason Copping acknowledged Alberta's vaccine rate for young kids is the lowest in the country, and they would like to reach the national average.

"We are constantly looking for ways to make vaccination easier for Albertans of all ages," said health minister Jason Copping.

"Extended hours and walk-in availability will help working families take their children for vaccines at times that work best for them."

The AHS vaccination clinics will be open on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from noon until 6 p.m. After Mar.16, the province will determine whether to continue with the clinics based on demand.

Parents and guardians can still book appointments for children ages five and older online by using the Alberta vaccine booking system or by calling 811.

Currently, 1,373 people are in hospital with COVID-19, including 90 in intensive care. Thirteen deaths were reported on Wednesday, to a total of 3,883 since the start of the pandemic.

Premier Jason Kenney is slated to announce a potential move to Step two of easing pandemic restrictions on Saturday.
