Children new to the school bus system, and their parents/guardians have a new tool to prepare for their first ride with the launch of a first ride video from Rocky View Schools (RVS).
The short informational video shows students and their parents/guardians what to expect and how to stay safe while riding on the school bus. Viewers can follow the students throughout their journey to and from school right up until they return home.
Helpful safety tips such as avoiding the bus danger zone are discussed, along with other important information all bus riders should know.
RVS is also hosting My First Ride, an in-person event for new bus riders presented by RVS bus contractors. Families are welcome to attend the free event on the evenings of Aug. 22 or 23, depending on if they live in an urban or rural area. At the event, families can learn more about school buses and take a short ride on a bus. Bus contractor and school division staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
The events will be taking place at the RVS Education Centre, 2651 Chinook Winds Drive SW, Airdrie. Please email transportation@rockyview.ab.ca to register. Each day is focused on either urban or rural areas.
- Aug. 22 at 6:00 p.m.: Students who reside in rural areas
- Aug. 23 at 6:00 p.m.: Students who reside in urban areas (i.e. Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane)
“Students may feel excited, nervous, or both when it is time for their first bus ride,” said Morley Kostecky, RVS senior manager of transportation. “Keeping students safe is a joint effort and RVS is committed to doing what we can to prepare our families so that the first ride and all rides are successful.”

Families are also reminded Aug. 15 is the last day to register for transportation in time to have bus service on the first day of school in September.
