Man hospitalized after aggravated assault in Portage; RCMP appeals for witnesses and information

Portage la Prairie RCMP are currently investigating a case of aggravated assault following a stabbing that took place last Saturday. 

Police say they responded to the stabbing on October 21, at 4:40 a.m., which occurred outside a residence on 19th Street NW,  

The victim, a 42-year-old man from Portage, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Pink Ladies Snow Ride for the Cure is a biannual event that aims to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. The organizers are now gearing up for the eighth installment of the fundraiser and are looking to build on the $324,000 that has been raised so far.

While the event is still months away, the pink ladies have already started with registration for their Ride for a Cure on February 3. According to committee member Tammy Hammersley, the early bird registration date has passed but people can certainly still register and be a part of the full day of events. 

Police seek answers regarding burned and stolen Vehicle in Portage

Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call that a vehicle had been burned on Highway 242 on October 15. 

According to police, the vehicle came back as stolen from a residence in the RM of Victoria on October 7. The vehicle was damaged beyond repair, and arson is suspected.

Long Plain First Nation woman faces impaired driving charges after single-vehicle crash in Portage

A 34-year-old female Long Plain First Nation driver is looking at impaired driving charges following a single-vehicle crash in Portage la Prairie.

Police say they were first notified on October 15th when they received a call about a single-vehicle collision with two occupants on Royal Road South. When officers arrived, they had grounds to believe that the 34-year-old woman driver from Long Plain First Nation had consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

Portage RCMP cordon off Apartment block at Gigot and 19th St NW

The northwest block of apartments at the corner of Gigot and 19 Street NW was cordoned off by RCMP this afternoon. No word has yet been provided about the cause and incident. Traffic is not being rerouted, and police remain on the scene investigating at about 2:00 p.m.

No further information is available at this time.

 

Field fire erupts east of MacGregor, Austin Fire Department responds

A field blaze took place east of MacGregor on Friday. The Austin Fire Department is on the scene trying to put out the fire.

High winds were blowing, which compounded the problem. There is no word on injuries, cause of the fire or damages at this time.

Portage man arrested for drugs and weapons after Canada-Wide warrant issued

RCMP made a search for a wanted Portage la Prairie man on 10th Street NW. Mateo Roulette, 25, was arrested on October 13, who attempted to evade police by climbing out a window.

A warrant of arrest was issued from Winnipeg for Being Unlawfully at Large and was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching his statutory release.

When Roulette was searched, 20 grams of methamphetamine, 65 grams of fentanyl, a large sum of cash and other drug paraphernalia were found and seized. Police also confiscated several air guns and ammunition from the room where the man was located.

Manitoba RCMP seek information regarding well-organized robbery in Selkirk 

Police officers in Selkirk are still scratching their heads when it comes to a robbery that took place in the community last Tuesday. 

The RCMP report shows that Selkirk RCMP received an alarm from a business located on Highway 9 in the RM of St. Andrews on October 10, at around 3:30 a.m.

Longer wait times expected at Portage railway crossings after waterline break

Residents of Portage la Prairie are being advised to anticipate longer wait times at railway crossings due to a waterline break in proximity to the railway.

Over the weekend, the City of Portage la Prairie communicated the news via social media. According to the city's Facebook post, the waterline break triggered a request to CN and CP to reduce their speeds within city limits. This, in turn, will cause longer waiting times for trains within city limits.

No information has been provided on how long it will take to fix this waterline break.

Portage RCMP charge Crane River man with driving high and carrying bear spray 

A Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was making patrols and conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on 6th Avenue NE last week, leading to multiple charges for a 27-year-old man.

On October 8, at approximately 11:36 a.m., the officer approached the vehicle. Cannabis was seen in open view inside the vehicle. Police searched the vehicle and located a can of bear spray under the driver’s seat. Subsequently, the 27-year-old man from Crane River First Nation was placed under arrest.
