IIU launches investigation into Stonewall arrest resulting in serious injury

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has announced that they are launching an investigation into the arrest of an adult man off Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 8. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the IIU on Tuesday of an incident that resulted in a serious injury. 

According to the notification, the RCMP officers tried to stop a white Ford F-150 in Stonewall on October 27 at 11:30 p.m. However, the vehicle reportedly fled and led the officers on a pursuit that ended on McPhillips Street at Emes Road at about 12:40 a.m.

Warmer days may lie ahead for Portage la Prairie. But first, residents will have to make it through this week.

Samantha Mauti, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says Portage has been experiencing seasonal weather recently, with the normal low for this time of year being -7 and the normal high +1.

Fire hydrant repairs force closure of Sissons Drive

The City of Portage la Prairie is advising its residents that Sissons Drive, from 24th St NW to Shindleman Way, will be closed until the end of the day Wednesday.

On the other hand, water services in that area, which were disrupted on Tuesday, have been restored for the evening.  However, another disruption of water services will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday to wrap up fire hydrant repairs taking place.

The restorations began at 9 a.m. Tuesday. 

Grade 9 Portage students share reactions to first day in workforce

November 1, across the province of Manitoba, was Take Our Kids to Work (TOKTW), as Grade 9 students got the chance to witness what goes on in the workplace. 

Blair Hordeski, career development coordinator with the Portage la Prairie School Division, expressed gratitude for the initiative's return last year after the pandemic.

"We really want our students not to necessarily decide when they're 15 years old what they want to do for the rest of their lives, but it's give it some thought. Think about what you might want to do as your path in education goes along."

Portage RCMP arrest Portage woman after theft incident 

A 43-year-old woman from Portage la Prairie is facing charges after a disturbance on October 28.

Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call from a business in the 100 block of Saskatchewan Avenue West of a theft in progress at 8:13 p.m.

Officers were reportedly informed that three people were involved. However, two people were found not to have committed an offence. The 43-year-old suspect from Portage la Prairie tried to flee and caused a disturbance inside the store.

Police apprehended the woman, and the stolen property was located when she was searched.

Portage RCMP arrest 16-year-old on charges of Assault

A youth in the Portage community is facing charges of Assault following an incident from the end of October.

Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call at a business in the 300 block of Saskatchewan Avenue East for a disturbance on October 27 at 3:06 p.m. When officers arrived, they learned that an assault had taken place. 

The victim did not require any medical attention.

Police arrested a 16-year-old male from Portage la Prairie who faces charges of Assault.

The youth was released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.

Portage neighbourhood saddened after Halloween decorations stolen

Laura Cote, a Portage la Prairie resident, is voicing her frustration and disappointment after discovering that her neighbourhood's Halloween decorations had been stolen and vandalized.

"For the last couple of weeks, we've noticed in our area in Portage here, we're on 1st St, and there were a lot of the decorations and lights and everything that has been stolen off properties right in front of the houses."

According to Cote, her house and three other houses on her street have all had their decorations taken.

Minnedosa RCMP searching for missing 55-year-old man 

Minnedosa RCMP are asking for the public's help locating a man who went missing last Friday. 

On October 30, at 4:50 p.m., Minnedosa RCMP received a report of a missing 55-year-old man from an address in the RM of Oakview. 

Jamie Wade was last seen on Friday at approximately 5 p.m. 

Wade is described as 5'10", 120 lbs, with short gray hair, green eyes and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing black jeans and a plaid jacket. 

Dauphin man arrested in Portage with firearm

Portage la Prairie RCMP have charged a Dauphin man with multiple weapons offences following a Saskatchewan Avenue incident.

Police say that on October 16, at 2:30 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were called to a business in the 100 block of Saskatchewan Avenue West. The caller indicated to the RCMP that a man was sitting outside this business with what looked to be a gun in his possession.

Officers arrived and took the 42-year-old male suspect from Dauphin into custody without incident.

Police arrest three suspects and recover over $500,000 worth of stolen property near Arborg

On Monday, October 23, at 10:10 a.m., officers from the Gimli RCMP detachment responded to a report of a truck and trailer having hit the ditch near a property located on Highway 329, in the RM of Bifrost-Riverton.

Police arrived and found two pickup trucks, one in the ditch and one on the property. As they approached the vehicles, two suspects were seen running away toward a residence, and a third having entered one of the trucks who drove away into the field at high speed.
