Manitoba RCMP make arrests after seizing 1 kilogram of cocaine

Manitoba’s RCMP West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST), along with Swan River RCMP, executed a search warrant at a residence in the RM of Mountain On July 21 as part of a drug-related investigation,

Police say that officers seized just over 1 kilogram of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a firearm. RCMP also seized two 2023 vehicles as proceeds of crime.

Three adults were reportedly arrested at the scene.

Forecast looking spicy in Portage to start work week 

Following weeks of moderate temperatures, Portage la Prairie is looking at a sweltering next couple of days before cooling off to end the week.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Portage will hit 31 degrees with the humidex Monday, 40 degrees with humidex Tuesday and 30 plus degrees again on Wednesday. 

Thursday and Friday will simmer down, with both days expected to have a high of 24 degrees.

United Way Central Plains dissolves 

United Way Central Plains is no more, but that doesn't mean that United Way will be leaving the Portage la Prairie area.

United Way Brandon & District will now serve the Central Plains region following the end of United Way Central Plains as of last Wednesday.

According to a release from the organization, they intend to hire local staff to work out of an office in Portage, and their goal is to have the office open in the middle of August.

Portage RCMP arrest man with brass knuckles and bow with arrows

Portage la Prairie RCMP uncovered drugs and multiple weapons after arresting an individual in the city on July 11.

Police say it all started when an officer observed a man with a warrant for his arrest meeting with another unknown individual at 5:25 p.m. that day.

The man was arrested with brass knuckles, cash, and a cell phone on him.

A search warrant was obtained by police, and the man's shed was found to have a backpack with a firearm, ammunition, illicit drugs, gun parts, and a bow with arrows.

Portage RCMP respond to two stabbings incidents during same evening

Three individuals are healing from stabbings in Portage la Prairie on July 15.

Police say the first report came in at 8:09 p.m. as two people had been stabbed and sustained severe injuries.

The suspect was known to the victims and was immediately arrested by police. One victim was transported to Portage General Hospital to have their injuries treated.

The suspect was released on conditions the next day.

MPI releases 'speed study' which shows Manitobans are not slowing down

Speeding on Manitoba roads continues to be one of the top contributing factors in serious and often deadly collisions, with 40 per cent of vehicles found travelling above the posted speed limit in a recent MPI province-wide study. 

Of these vehicles, seven percent were travelling more than 10 kilometers above the posted speed limit.

Military Police National Motorcycle Relay set to throttle through Portage

The Military Police National Motorcycle Relay will rock and roll through Portage la Prairie Tuesday afternoon to raise funds for blind children.

The relay commences in Victoria, British Columbia, for an expedition through the Rockies, Prairies, Central and Eastern provinces, and Atlantic Canada, covering over 10 000 kilometres coast-to-coast, wrapping up in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Portage Legion Branch #65 will host the riders for a lunch and donation ceremony around 1:30 p.m.

Manitoba man crashes stolen EMS vehicle into tree

Manitoba RCMP are dispensing news of an interesting incident from over the weekend.

Police say that on July 8, at 9:00 p.m., Thompson RCMP received a report of a man jumping in front of traffic and punching vehicles on Princeton Drive in Thompson.

A few minutes later, police were notified that an ambulance had crashed into a tree near that location. Officers attended and located the same man in the driver's seat of the ambulance. After being hit by the ambulance, a minivan was also damaged at that location.

Portage RCMP charge pair of 17-year-olds after Canada Day traffic stop 

Two 17-year-olds face charges after a traffic stop in Portage la Prairie on July 1.

Police say they stopped the vehicle on Canada Day, resulting in the discovery of crack cocaine, cocaine, cannabis, bear spray & over $1000.00 in cash.

The RCMP note that while the investigation continues, both 17-year-olds are facing several charges
