Portage Mayor excited to light the candles for city's birthday
Portage la Prairie turned 116 years old today, February 13th, and our newest mayor is happy to celebrate with the city.
Mayor Sharilyn Knox says that it's important that citizens take a moment to recognize this milestone, which dates back to 1907.
She highlights that the city will be celebrating the birthday this evening at Winterfest with cake, tea and other refreshments from around the world.
Portage RCMP respond to machete attack
Portage la Prairie RCMP received two reports of stabbing incidents within the last week.
On February 4th at 9:30 a.m. Portage RCMP was made aware of a report that a man had attended the hospital with severe stab wounds.
The 27-year-old man from Portage was treated and released. RCMP continued to investigate the incident.
Then, days later, on, Thursday, February 9th, at approximately 5:50 a.m. Portage RCMP received a report that a man had been struck in the head with a machete.
RCMP seize cocaine, meth and weapons in Rossburn
Russel RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter earlier this month which led to the discovery of a lot of no good.
Russell RCMP say they received a report of a break and enter in progress at a residence located on Main Street in Rossburn on February 3rd.
Police share they were advised that two subjects were first heard outside when one of them forcefully broke into the home. The homeowner contacted the police, and the suspects fled on foot. No injuries were reported.
Hockey Canada announces Centennial Cup Schedule
The biggest tournament in Junior A Canadian Hockey is only a few months away, and we now know exactly when the puck will drop in Portage la Prairie.
The 51st edition of the Centennial Cup will feature ten of the nation's best teams as they duke it out at Stride Place between May 11-21. The hometown Portage Terriers will be joined by each champion of the nine CJHL leagues.
Portage RCMP arrest a 22-year-old for breaking windows
The Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call in the early hours of February 2nd about someone damaging a window in the 700 block of Phillips Street.
Officers attended and arrested an intoxicated 22-year-old suspect from Long Plain First Nation.
Later that morning, another report came down to the RCMP of a building in the same area with a broken window.
The video showed police it was the same suspect. Police say that the suspect was held to sober up and faces two counts of Mischief Under $5,000. He was released to appear in court at a later date.
RCMP looking for break and enter suspect
The Portage la Prairie RCMP is reaching out for your help to fund a suspect.
In the early hours of December 17th, at about 5:30 a.m., police received the report of a break-and-enter that occurred at a business in the 1800 block of Saskatchewan Avenue West in Portage.
He entered the business through a smashed door window, and was there very briefly, having taken cigarettes and two other items. Police say he ran to the alleyway and RCMP believe he entered a vehicle and left the scene.

Russell man arrested for online threats
On January 11, at approximately 10:05 am, Russell RCMP received a report from INTERPOL that an online social media account, associated to a resident of Russell, had uttered threatening comments via various social media platforms towards law enforcement personnel, government officials and medical professionals.
An investigation was conducted to determine the identity of the account holder and from where the threats originated.
Whoop and Hollar Open Mic and Jam Night ready to welcome all
Tonight brings a perfect opportunity for creative personalities from all over to show off their talents in Portage la Prairie.
From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, the Whoop and Hollar Folk Festival will bring back their Open Mic and Jam Night.
This will be the first Open Mic and Jam Night in person since 2019, a genuine thrill for Whoop and Hollar Coordinator Linda Omichinski.
Two charged with drug possession
Portage la Prairie RCMP pulled over and arrested four people on Boxing Day for being in possession of drugs.
Police were patrolling 20th Street SW around 3:25 a.m. when they made the stop. The officer saw an item indicative of drug use and placed all four under arrest. A search of the vehicle and the people inside resulted in the discovery of not just drug paraphernalia, but also weapons including a taser.
