Salvation Army Christmas Kettles Launching Thursday

The Salvation Army's Christmas kettles will be set up across town starting this Thursday in hopes of once again providing everyone with the best holiday season possible.

Brandon Letexier, the Christmas Kettle Coordinator for the Portage area, explains that the kettles will run from November 23 to December 23 at Co-op, Portage Supermarket, Walmart and Sobeys.

RCMP Officer gets sprayed with gasoline during arrest on Long Plain First Nation

Five people (two adults and three youths) have been arrested during a warrant arrest on Long Plain First Nation Saturday afternoon.

Police say that members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) attended the 90 Block of Keesh Drive on the reserve. Officers had received information that Brent Houle, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, was possibly at this location.

Multiple weapons charges laid after single-vehicle rollover in the RM of Portage

Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover last Thursday, leading to an occupant of the car being charged with multiple weapons offences.

Police say they received a call about the incident on Highway 26 at Road 34 West in the RM of Portage la Prairie on November 16 at 11:40 p.m.

'Drug house' in Dakota Tipi First Nation demolished Friday afternoon

At about 2 p.m. Friday, November 17th, a house was demolished as part of Dakota Tipi First Nation's war against drugs. Justice Coordinator Braden Pashe says the chief and council have every right to enter the home with its First Nation Security Officers, seeing as such homes are band-owned. 

Prairie Harbour hopeful for meaningful change during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

November was proclaimed as Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox at City Hall at the beginning of the month.

Tara Hayes and Victoria Rey from Prairie Harbour Inc. joined Mayor Knox and City Councillor Colin Doyle for the proclamation.

"Having the opportunity to meet with Mayor Knox just reconfirmed the fact that the city is supportive, and that she, as a person, is supportive of what we do," says Hayes. "It was just really validating and rewarding to know that we are being supported by our community leaders."

Dakota Tipi First Nation blows lid off politics and drugs

"It's about helping our people. For some God-given reason, I was put into this position. So, I'm here to help do that and I'm here to execute what I'm supposed to be doing. Love me or not, I don't care. I'm just here to do a job."

That's Dakota Tipi First Nation Councillor Karl Stone referring the hard-hitting manner that his community's Drug Task Force is taking on the war on drugs.

Portage RCMP arrest three men following traffic stop

Portage la Prairie RCMP arrested three men on multiple offences after an incident from the start of November.

The police report says that on November 3, at 9:45 a.m., a Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was making patrols and observed a passenger in a vehicle drinking what looked like an alcohol beverage.

The officer then conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle. The officer observed several open containers of alcohol and placed the three suspects under arrest. During the search of the arrested individuals, drugs, stolen property and a weapon were located.  

Tim Hortons launches Holiday Cookie Campaign to support community causes 

A brand-new Tim Hortons cookie campaign aimed at supporting the community has arrived in Portage la Prairie. 

From November 13th to November 19th, Tim Hortons customers can contribute toward the Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and Tim Hortons Foundation Camps. 

The Holiday Cookie Campaign has been introduced to raise funds for both causes, with half of the cookie sales going to PAWS and the other half to the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.

Drugs and stolen property found after traffic stop off Highway 7 and Highway 67

Two Manitoba men face charges following a traffic stop last Wednesday in the RM of Rockwood. 

At 1:00 am on November 8, while on patrol, the Stonewall RCMP noticed a suspicious vehicle parked just off Highway 7 and Highway 67.

Upon checking the vehicle, the officer noticed two people who appeared to be sleeping inside. The officer knocked on the window and the driver opened the door; however, during the process, police observed drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. As a result, both were arrested.
