Golfers swing big for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Portage

Under initially uncertain skies that gave way to perfect sunshine, six dedicated golfers conquered an incredible 90 holes each at the Portage Golf Club today, all in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Portage la Prairie.

The marathon fundraiser saw participants tee off early this morning, battling fatigue but buoyed by community spirit and a beautiful afternoon, ultimately raising crucial funds for the organization's mentoring programs.

Grade 7 and 8 students from all HSD schools celebrate Soccer Day

Grade 7s and 8s from all HSD schools gathered for Soccer Day in Steinbach's’ Soccer Park. 

Some families gathered on the sidelines to support their kids and enjoy the cool weather.  

One gym teacher and organizer, Trevor Paton, says that this is an amazing way for people  access sports without the worry of scheduling after school programming. 

Portage gathers in honour of Indigenous heritage

Throughout the day at the Island Park, activities were held for all ages, from face painting to Indigenous games, with auctions happening throughout the day as well.

Live music played during the opening of the event to get things going, with Nigerian dancers following with a great performance. Indigenous dancers lead by a drum circle carried the afternoon with circle dances, including all to join.

Walk for Alzheimer’s brings Portage together

A sunny sky and strong turnout helped turn this year’s Walk for Alzheimer’s into something more than just a fundraiser. It became a day of connection, compassion, and community strength. For Nicole McDonald, senior manager of Dementia-Friendly Communities with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, and Pam Anderson local office coordinator, the energy of the crowd spoke volumes.

McDonald reflects on the strong turnout and sense of unity at the event, crediting local support and enthusiasm for making the day so memorable. 

The 5th annual Southeast Truck show brings in donations for the community

This weekend brought a ton of semi-trucks to Steinbach for the Southeast Truck Show.   

Organizer Bill Schroeder says that the truck show started 5 years ago to help his daughter working for Youth For Christ raise enough to finance her year.   

“I figured I'd get 10,12,13 trucks together, have a little bit of a shindig, and make a couple bucks. Well, that ended up being 41 semis' and we may raise over $10,000.”  

Adult and Teen Challange held its first ever Transformation Tractor Ride

Neufeld’s Garage hosted Adult and Teen Challange’s first-ever Transformation Tractor Ride.   

The fundraiser included approximately 50 sponsored tractors driving to raise funds for a life free from addiction.   

CEO of Adult and Teen Challenge, Daniel Emond, says that this fundraiser focuses on support from the Steinbach area.   

Hot dog sale supports seniors’ outdoor space 

Portage la Prairie residents and visitors alike were invited to enjoy lunch for a cause this week at Douglas Campbell Lodge, where a hot dog sale brings together sunshine, community spirit, and support for local seniors.

Corrine Pratt, the recreation coordinator at the lodge, says the event is part of their annual efforts to improve the quality of life for the residents. 

Parades, trucks, and tractors; Tons of events are rolling in this weekend

The first weekend of summer brings trucks, tractors, and parades, as events fill up schedules.  The Steinbach and district farmers market opens Thursday, as an early start to the list of things going on this weekend. Additionally, there will be a tractor trek, the Southeast Truck show, and St Jean Baptiste Days events taking place. We will be at almost all the events this weekend, so make sure to tune in!
