At Winkler Harvest Festival's parade with over 100 entries, safety matters

As summer draws to a close, parade season in the Pembina Valley is in full swing. For the remainder of the month, residents will have ample opportunity to enjoy the customary sights and sounds of the crowd-drawing festivities. 

The next one on the schedule is Winkler’s Harvest Festival parade, which Carrie Heenan has been organizing for the past thirteen years.  

“It’s a fun day,” she says. 

CCI softball tourney makes triumphant return to the diamond

The crowd cheered on six local teams as players hit home runs to send kids to camp at the Children's Camps International (CCI) softball tournament last weekend in Winkler.

Nearly a week after the event, the final tally is in, and the tournament raised over $26,700. CCI Executive Director, Dave Thiessen, says this will send over 5,000 kids to camp in Asia and Southeast Asia, raising them up to be Jesus-centred leaders. 

Harvest Festival Headliner Chayce Beckham and his raw creativity

The Harvest Festival will host American Idol royalty this Saturday. 

Chayce Beckham is a CMT nominated singer-songwriter whose platinum single “23” has captivated and resonated with the country music scene recently. The 28-year-old musician will bring his authentic country spirit and stripped-down lyricism to the Harvest Festival in Winkler on Saturday as the night’s headliner.  

Sea Bears break the ice with record-shattering attendance in 2024

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have yet again broken the Canadian Elite Basketball League's (CEBL) single-season attendance record.

Manitoba's professional basketball team had 86,275 fans over 10 regular season games in 2024. This surpasses their previous record of 55,029 set during their inaugural season in 2023 according to a news release from the club.

Energy goes 3-3 at Western Canadian Championship

Central Energy competed at the 2024 Western Canadian U15 Softball Championships last week in Battlefords, Saskatchewan.

The team went 2-2 in round robin play, good enough for 3rd place in their pool and a chance at the playoff round.

Central’s first game was a 10-1 loss to the eventual champion Lacombe Selects. The Energy battled back to win both games on Saturday, 21-0 vs Yukon Sundogs and 3-1 vs Ridge Meadow Pride from BC. Their last round robin game was a tight 2-1 loss to a tough Twin City Angels team from Saskatchewan.

Year after year, one of the features of the Harvest Festival that brings out crowds in abundance is its food scene. From the sweet tooth who gets their fill of mini donuts and lemonade to the foodie keen on trying new vendors and cuisines, food plays a large role on the fairgrounds. This Harvest Festival weekend (August 9th – 11th) will be no different. 
 

Canada pulls diplomats' kids out of Israel as fear of broader war builds

Global Affairs Canada says it has approved the temporary relocation of the children and their guardians to a safe third country.

Embassy staff are expected to remain in Israel.

"The Embassy of Canada to Israel in Tel Aviv, the Embassy of Canada to Lebanon in Beirut, and the Representative Office of Canada to the Palestinian Authority, all remain fully operational and continue to provide essential services to Canadians, including consular services," Global Affairs Canada said in a statement Wednesday evening.
