In the SIJHL tonight, the Sioux Lookout Bombers are set to take on the Dryden GM Ice Dogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 at the Dryden Memorial Arena.
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs hold down second place in the SIJHL standings and Sioux Lookout is two points back in third, though the Bombers have a game in hand.
The Fort Frances Lakers lost their 13th straight in an 8-2 loss to the Thunder Bay North Stars last night. Ryker Watt and Kevin Bonds scored for the Lakers. The two teams play again in Thunder Bay tonight.
3 from Kenora Caught with $34k of Meth, Cocaine
Three Kenora residents are facing several charges each after a drug bust on Ninth Street North on Tuesday.
The Kenora OPP says after an investigation between officers in Kenora, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Fort Frances, as well as the Treaty Three Police Service, a search warrant was executed in the 200 block of Ninth Street South on January 24.
Premier Addresses ROMA Conference
Ontario’s Premier sees small and rural communities being a part of the government’s plan to grow the economy.
Doug Ford addressed municipal reps attending the Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference on Monday in Toronto.
Ford says that growth comes with a need to address infrastructure.
Convenience Stores Still Waiting for 5 year old Promise
Ontario’s convenience stores want the provincial government to allow them to sell beer in their stores.
Premier Ford promised to do it five years ago.
Speaking before the province’s finance committee in Windsor, Chief Executive Officer with the Ontario Convenience Stores Association David Bryans says they should be on an equal playing field.
“Since then, we’ve seen the expansion of beverage alcohol to grocery outlets, additional LCBO agency stores, over 1,800 bars and restaurants allowed to sell beverage alcohol with delivered foods,” says Bryans.
Transport Canada Recalling Certain BMW Motorcycles
Transport Canada is recalling certain BMW Motorcycles.
2019 to 2023 Motorcycles that are models R1250 GS and R1250 RT might have a rear wheel that locks suddenly.
Although uncommon, a sudden difference in speed between the engine and rear wheel, could damage or break the gearbox input shaft.
BMW will contact you by mail if you need to bring your motorcycle into the dealership to update the engine software.
City Transit Not Operating Today And Tomorrow
Anyone who relies on city transit to get around will be out of luck over the next two days.
The City of Kenora says its transit bus is out of service for maintenance and repairs.
A spare bus is not available.
The transit service may resume tomorrow if the repair work is completed before the regular schedule ends.
In the meantime, the Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium says bus KN 26 won’t be running today.
Triple Play Seeking Municipal Support
Triple Play is once again hitting up the city for funding.
It was one of the groups that presented their budget request last week.
Barry Reynard is the coordinator of the program and says they aren’t asking for a lot of money.
“We’re looking for the $12,000 ask,” Reynard told Kenora city council last week at their open meeting.
“Our revenue sources come from a variety of areas. We’re averaging on the small end of $100,000 in revenue, as well our as expenditures. We like to spend that out as well.”
Curling action kicks off in Kenora
Kenora’s curlers are ready to see some action!
The Northern Ontario Curling Association’s Provincial Championships will be taking place at the Kenora Recreation Centre until January 29.
The winner of the Men's side will go on to the Tim Horton’s Brier, and the winner of the Women’s side will be at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts – both representing Ontario.
There are 11 teams for the Men, with 2 from Kenora, and 7 teams for the Women.
KPDSB, Open Roads celebrating Literacy Week
Students throughout the region will be focusing on their reading and writing skills this week as educators across the province celebrate Literacy Week.
Events are being planned at each school with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
Literacy Support Teacher at Dryden’s Open Roads Public School, Karen Kudlacek, explains the week is a great way to remind students about the importance of literacy in the real world.
Lions Club Seeks More Members
The need for volunteers continues.
The Voyageur Lions Club is one organization recruiting new members.
Long-time member Bill Michl says Lions clubs have helped area communities grow.
“There’s proof out there that all these small communities that have Lions Clubs seem to be better. They have things that are community-minded playgrounds. They have health at their hospitals, they have help with the elderly, they make an impact on the community, and the community seems to be better for it,” says Michl.
The Club has been instrumental in several projects.
