NWHU shares information about monkeypox, prevention measures
A call to action has been issued by the WHO in regards to monkeypox.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared monkeypox a global health emergency as case numbers continue to rise globally. Currently, there has been a spike in cases in Ontario, mainly in the Toronto area.
At this time, the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) says there are no cases in the region, however, they are preparing for the possibility.
LWCB offers update of declining level of Lake of the Woods
Lake of the Woods remained stable this past week according to the LWCB.
According to the Lake of the Woods Control Board (LWCB), the current level of Lake of the Woods is 324.03 m (1063.1 ft), over the 95th percentile for this time of year. The average lake level declined by 6cm (2in) over the past week.
Runway work to cause delays at Kenora Airport this summer
Users of the Kenora Airport are warned of construction work this summer that may impact flights and cause delays.
The Kenora Airport Authority says the length of the airport’s runway will be shortened until September 10 during the work, and it’ll be completely closed between September 10 and September 30.
All users are asked to give the airport and Nav Canada’s Flight Services Station as much notice as possible for any arrivals and departures this summer, as the runway will take time to clear away any construction equipment.

For the first time since the start of a Canadian tour highlighted by apologies for the Catholic Church's role in Indigenous residential schools, Pope Francis on Thursday acknowledged sexual abuse inflicted on "minors and vulnerable people."
Speaking at a prayer service at Quebec City's Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, Francis said the church in Canada is on a new path after being devastated by “the evil perpetrated by some of its sons and daughters.”

Local pilots Roland Biber and Tim Treadway are back after placing third in the Air Venture Race in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It’s an annual air show and gathering of aviation fans held each summer. The two were the only Canadians in their division, finishing a nearly 700 km track in 3.5 hours.

Kenora OPP arrest Winnipeg resident with impaired driving, resisting arrest
A number of charges have been laid against a Winnipeg resident following a failed traffic stop.
On July 22, at approximately 1:24 am, members of the Kenora detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a possible impaired driver.

Melvyn Hanton took home the second prize, $167,497.90, on the June 22, 2022 Lotto 6/49 draw and also won $2 with the Encore to bring his total winnings to $167,499.90.
"I checked my ticket at the store, and I was shocked. I started to shake when I realized it was real. I told my parents, and they were super excited!" said Hanton in a prepared release from OLG.
