We share the peaceful passing of Allison Helen Naomi McKay, aged 101 on October 13th, 2022 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.

Allison will be lovingly remembered as Mom to Diane Paroby, Grandma to Warren Paroby, Corey McKay and Nanny to Jory Paroby. She is survived by sister Betty Boutlier, sister-in-law Dorothy Crewe, brother-in-law Archie Mckay (Sybil) and daughter-in-law, Brenda McKay as well as nieces and nephews.

One-in-five have voted in Kenora so far

Residents still have one more week to vote for their future Mayor and Councillors, and so far in Kenora, about one in five residents have cast their ballots.

Returning Officer for the 2022 Municipal Election, Heather Pihulak, says as of October 17, about 20 per cent of eligible voters in Kenora have voted – which is right on target compared to the previous two electronic elections in the community.

Oct. 17 Sports Update 

The Dryden GM Ice dogs are back home after a successful weekend in Wisconsin. They took both in their 2-game series on the road winning 3-2 on Friday and 4-3 Saturday. 

Meanwhile, the Sioux Lookout Bombers didn't fare as well. They were taken down in both Friday and Saturday night's game in Thunder Bay. The Lumberjacks took it 4-3 on Friday and blanked the Bombers 5-0 Saturday. 

Inductees recognized at 2nd Kenora Sports Hall of Fame event

Seven more athletes and builders are now honoured in the Kenora Sports Hall of Fame.

The second Kenora Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held Saturday evening at Seven Generations Education Institute. Seven local athletes or builders were recognized for their accomplishments.

Ottawa mayor, top officials testifying at Emergencies Act inquiry

The inquiry into the federal government's use of the Emergencies Act will hear first-hand testimony Monday from top City of Ottawa officials about February's "Freedom Convoy" protest, including the mayor. 

Outgoing mayor Jim Watson, his chief of staff and the city’s manager are expected to detail for the commission the efforts they took to peacefully end protests in Ottawa. 

Chief Gardner re-elected in Eagle Lake First Nation

Eagle Lake First Nation’s Band Chief and Councillors will have another two-year term ahead of them.

Chief Arnold Gardner and Councillors Trisha Kavanaugh, Sheldon Adams and Lloyd Napish were all re-elected following the community’s election night last week.

This will be the third consecutive term for this batch of councillors. They still have a while to catch up to Chief Gardner, who was first elected as Chief in 1990. He’s been leading the community for over 30 years now.

Ontario creates Kiiwetinoong Health Team for NWO

Residents across the Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Red Lake areas will soon have an easier time getting specialized healthcare services in their home communities.

The Provincial Government has announced they’ve approved the creation of a new Ontario Health Term serving those three areas in northwestern Ontario, called the Kiiwetinoong Healing Waters Ontario Health Team.

Dynamic defence powers B.C. Lions to 40-32 win over Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Rick Campbell was proud of the perseverance his B.C. Lions showed on Saturday.

Up against the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Lions faltered late but held on for a crucial 40-32 victory. 

"I'm proud that we kept with it. It got down to six points, but our guys, we didn't start pointing fingers or people weren't hanging their heads and that's the biggest thing for me," said Campbell, B.C.'s head coach and co-general manager.
