Kenora has the most expensive gas in Ontario, again
Fuel prices in northwestern Ontario have seen a 12-cent increase overnight – bringing the district to the unfortunate ‘top spot’ for fuel prices in the province.
We’ve been at 180.9 per litre since the end of July, but drivers in Kenora woke up to prices sitting at 192.9 per litre today. That’s the seventh largest day-to-day fuel price increase in Canada, behind the 25-cent increase seen in Chilliwack, BC today.
Toxic algae confirmed in Kenora-area lake
The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Northwestern Health Unit have confirmed the presence of toxic blue-green algae on Cedar Lake, off of Highway 105 near Vermilion Bay.
Residents are asked to avoid the area for a minimum of two weeks after the algae bloom has disappeared before using water, swimming or drinking from the lake.
Four Sandy Lake residents charged with drug, firearm possession
Four Sandy Lake First Nation residents are facing a number of charges after police seized a variety of drugs and firearms after two search warrants in the community.
The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service says officers seized cocaine, oxycodone and hydromorphone, as well as three firearms and Canadian currency, with support from the OPP.

In Port aux Basques, N.L., residents reeling after Fiona destroys dozens of homes
Jocelyn Gillam knows she’s lucky to be alive after coming face-to-face with the post-tropical storm that destroyed part of her southwestern Newfoundland town and nearly swept her away in a surge of rushing water.
Gillam was standing near her home in Port aux Basques on Saturday morning when a storm surge hit, sweeping her off her feet and dragging her underneath a Jeep as she clung to the undercarriage for dear life.
The 61-year-old said she'd been chatting with family and neighbours when she turned her head and “saw Fiona coming.”
COVID-19 outbreak at Meno Ya Win, restrictions in effect
Visitor restrictions are now in effect at Sioux Lookout’s Meno Ya Win Health Centre after two cases of COVID-19 were found over the weekend in two in-patients.
Staff say contact tracing is underway and anyone who is identified as a risk has been contacted.

The Dryden GM Ice Dogs fell to 0-2 over the weekend after a pair of losses to the Kam River Fighting Walleye to start the 2022-2023 regular season.
They have a few days to get themselves together ahead of a 7:30 matchup against the Wisconsin Lumberjacks on Friday night at the Dryden Memorial Arena.
Two Canadian teams are in action tonight in the NHL pre-season. The Montreal Canadiens open their exhibition schedule at home against the New Jersey Devils, while the Edmonton Oilers host the Calgary Flames.
Kurt Browning visits regional skaters
World figure skating hall of fame member and four-time world champion figure skater Kurt Browning was in Sioux Lookout with figure skating groups from the region over the weekend.
Browning, who is also well known for his role in Stars on Ice held seminars for local skating groups from Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Kenora and Keewatin during the Saturday and Sunday sessions.

Feds lift border vaccine mandates, mandatory masks on planes and trains
Federal ministers say all COVID-19 border restrictions will end as of Saturday, including mandatory vaccinations, testing and quarantine of international travellers, as well as mandatory masks on planes and trains.
The cabinet order maintaining COVID-19 border measures will not be renewed when it expires on Sept. 30.
The change will mean foreign nationals no longer require an approved series of vaccinations to enter the country.
