Man dead after falling from equipment during Canada Day parade in Fort Vermilion

RCMP say Canada Day celebrations led to tragedy in a small northern Alberta community.

Mounties in Fort Vermilion say a 45-year-old man was fatally injured during Monday's parade.

The man from Mackenzie County fell off the equipment he was throwing candy from. 

RCMP say officers were dispatched to assist emergency services with the accident.

They say in a statement they are sending their condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.

Roll into fun: new lawn bowling turf at Muskoseepi Park ready for play

Bridge culvert replacement on Range Road 65 starts today

Construction on a section of Range Road 65 between Highway 59 and Township Road 742 has begun, and is expected to be completed by July 31 weather permitting.

The project involves replacing a bridge culvert, and a detour route using Range Road 70 will be in place as Range Road 65 will be closed to all but local traffic.

Speed limits will be reduced in the construction zone.

Drivers are urged to obey all signs and flag persons, exercise extreme caution, and allow extra travel time.

City releases dates for this year’s afternoon teas at the Forbes Homestead

Afternoon tea at the city’s oldest home, the Reverend Forbes Homestead, is now open for registration for times in July and August.

Teas take place at 2 p.m. on the following days:

·         Wednesdays:

o   July: 10, 17 and 24.

o   August: 14 and 21

·         Thursdays:

o   July 11, 18 and 25.

o   August 15 and 22.

Newsboys releasing new single from another 'God's Not Dead' movie

Newsboys have recorded a new track which will be featured in the fifth instalment in the God's Not Dead movie series.

'In God We Trust' will be released on July 19 on the group's new album Worldwide Revival: Part One. 'Heaven On Earth,' another song from the album is getting close to hitting 1 million views on YouTube after being released two months ago.

Protein Industries Canada is looking for someone to take over its top role. 

Bill Greuel, who has been CEO of the organization since it was created in October of 2018, is leaving. He has accepted the position of Deputy Minister of Agriculture with the Government of Saskatchewan. is last day with Protein Industries Canada will be July 31,2024.

The board will announce the appointment of an interim CEO in the coming weeks while the search for a permanent CEO is underway.

Meeting House 'pausing normal ministry' after losing insurance due to abuse allegations

The Meeting House Church in Ontario announced a temporary pause in its ministry activities due to challenges in securing insurance coverage.

The development stems from historical incidents and allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse involving former pastors, which continue to impact the church's reputation with insurers.

WestJet flight disruptions are expected to continue this week, after a deal was reached over the weekend to end a strike by its mechanics.

The airline said in a statement Monday morning that "full resumption of operations will take time and further cancellations will be required over the coming days."

Some 680 members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association had walked off the job on Friday evening despite a directive for binding arbitration from federal Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan.
