Spruce Ridge reflects on year of learning, laughter and giving back

As the school year wraps up, Spruce Ridge School principal Cheri Haberstock reflected on a busy and memorable year.

“This has been a crazy busy, but awesome year,” she said.

One of the top highlights came early in the school year with an Indigenous learning day in October, which saw Westview and Hillcrest students joining Spruce Ridge.

“We had over 600 students and we had 10 different knowledge keepers who were here helping us learn more about First Nations and Métis culture,” said Haberstock.

Southern Saskatchewan set to be swamped with serious system

The Estevan area just got done with a handful of tornadoes tearing through the area, but more adverse weather is already on the way. This weekend, a system is expected to dump a lot of rain into the area, beginning today and continuing to Sunday night.

Saskatchewan Trucking Association calls for financial support to train new drivers

The Saskatchewan Trucking Association is urging the provincial government to help reduce financial barriers for new drivers entering the trucking industry, as the average age of drivers continues to rise and fewer young people are taking the wheel.

The cost of obtaining a Class 1A driver’s license in Saskatchewan sits around $14,000. Students in 1A training programs are not eligible for student loans. A small tax rebate has been promised by the provincial government, but it has not yet been launched.

Searchers recover second body after rockfall near Banff National Park hiking trail

Search teams located a second body Friday following a massive rockfall off a hiking trail in Banff National Park.

“RCMP are notifying their next of kin and no further information is available at this time,” read a statement issued by Mounties and Parks Canada.

A 70-year-old woman from Calgary was first found dead at the site of Thursday's rock slide at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.

Three others were taken to hospital and were reported in stable condition.

Awareness month highlights support for Deafblind community

June has been proclaimed Deafblind Awareness Month in Saskatchewan, recognizing individuals in the Deafblind community and the organizations that support them.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to recognize Deafblind Awareness Month, and we value the important work of CNIB Deafblind Community Services,” Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said in a news release. “We look forward to continuing to build strong, inclusive communities for persons with disabilities alongside our disability services community partners.”

Four tornadoes confirmed over southeast during yesterday's storm

The southeast saw quite a storm last night, as Environment Canada has confirmed that four tornadoes touched down in southeast communities. Tornado watches and warnings were put out well in advance, with those tracking through smaller areas in the southeast.

Growing conditions stable in southeast, but producers watching skies for rain

Growing conditions in southeast Saskatchewan remain stable, but producers are watching closely for rain as dry and windy weather threatens to stress crops, according to the latest crop report.

Farmers are hoping for precipitation to support further development and prevent crop deterioration. Areas that have seen little moisture so far say their crops are holding on for now; however, strong winds are quickly drying out the topsoil.

Multiple events hitting Estevan baseball diamonds this weekend

Estevan will play host to some finals this weekend as baseball teams descend on the diamonds here in town. The games will host a few minor leagues with teams coming from across the southeast.

Estevan Minor Baseball President Mel Murray talks about the upcoming games this weekend.

"The Moose Mountain League has their wrap-up this weekend, and Estevan is hosting the 18U over at Lynn Prime Park. We're also hosting the 11U down at Cactus Park."

The 11U tournament will feature the Estevan Minor Baseball League teams as they go head-to-head.

Officials say one dead, three hurt in rockfall at Banff National Park hiking trail

Police and parks officials say one person was killed and three were injured in a rockfall at a remote hiking trail in Banff National Park.

They say the search continues to confirm no other hikers are missing following the early afternoon tragedy at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.

One person had been found dead and the extent of the injuries to the other three is unknown.

Two of the three injured were taken to a Calgary hospital by STARS air ambulance and the third went to hospital by ground ambulance.
