Canadian resident arrested in Quebec over alleged New York terror plot

When a father and son were arrested this summer in Ontario over an alleged terrorist plot, U.S. authorities say the news spooked a 20-year-old Pakistani national and Canadian resident named Muhammad Shahzeb Khan.

They say Khan used encrypted messaging to warn that because of the arrests "here in Toronto," there was a need to "lay low" on his own alleged plans: killing as many Jewish people as possible in New York around the Oct. 7 anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel.

Manitoba Grand Chief Cathy Merrick dies after collapsing outside courthouse

Tributes poured in Friday for Grand Chief Cathy Merrick of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, who died after collapsing outside the Winnipeg Law Courts building. 

Merrick, the first woman elected to the role, was talking to reporters about two court cases when she said she felt dizzy and fell to the ground. 

Fire and paramedic crews arrived, performed chest compressions and carried Merrick away on a stretcher to an ambulance, which sped off with its siren on.

Neutral ground: Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pats ready to square off in Estevan

Preseason action continues in Estevan, as Affinity Place play host to a 40 year rivalry. 

The Moose Jaw Warriors and the Regina Pats are making their way into the Energy City to face off in a Western Hockey League preseason scrimmage. Even looking back in the previous season, there was a healthy rivalry that brewed between the teams. The Warriors were able to dominate their Regina counterparts by claiming 7 out of the 8 meetings they had.

Animal neglect trial ends with Crown staying the charges


Tom Miller, a Craik area producer is trying to regroup after a long stressful ordeal and trial on charges of animal neglect that resulted in the Crown staying the charges against him before the closing arguments were heard.

The decision to "stay the charges" means that the trial and verdict have been put on hold, however, the charges are still in play and can be enacted anytime within the next year.

Miller says it's been a long haul, but it showed I was right.

Provincial and federal governments expanding grants for childcare wages

More money is going to childcare in Saskatchewan from both the provincial and federal governments in order to boost the recruiting and retaining of staff.

$8.4 million is coming from both governments in the form of early learning and child care workforce enhancement grants, with an additional $1 million adding up to a total of around $53 million to the Early Childhood Educator wage enhancement grant.

On average this change represents an extra $1 an hour increase to the ECE wage enhancement grant maximums for all certification levels.

Don’t get scammed: key advice to protect your cards and crypto

As fraud cases rise in Estevan, interim police chief Warren Morrical is offering crucial advice on how residents can protect themselves from scams, including cryptocurrency fraud and stolen credit card usage.

Morrical said there has been a variety of scams, including cryptocurrency purchases that turned out to be fraudulent, e-transfers for goods where the goods never arrived and the sellers became unreachable, and the use of stolen credit cards. Four individuals were charged with using stolen credit cards in the past month.

Evelyn Ann Boire passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on September 1, 2024 at the age of 84.

A Memorial Service will be held in Evelyn's honour, on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Lampman, Sask. with Rev. Sharon Kane officiating. Please join the family for a time of lunch and fellowship at the Royal Canadian Legion in Lampman immediately following the service. Inurnment in the Columbarium at the Estevan City Cemetery will take place at a later date.
