Estevan firefighters work hard at home and up north in latest EFR report
The latest Estevan Fire Rescue report sheds light on some of their latest calls in the community and how crews have been faring with wildfires up north.
On July 21, at around 8:30 p.m., a request was received from a home Northeast of the city to investigate a possible gas leak. The on-call duty officer responded with gas detection equipment and found that no gas levels were detected, but a gas smell was present. SaskEnergy was then requested to help the owner further troubleshoot the issue.
AgSmart 2025 opens today at Olds College
Today marks the start of AgSmart 2025, the educational agriculture expo is now being held at Olds College.
The event falls under the direction of the Agri Trade Equipment Expo Group. Show Manager Tracy Gardner says this year's event is going to look a little different.
Advocates question fairness as federal government backs away from pharmacare program
Reproductive health advocates say the federal government's failure to commit to funding pharmacare in all provinces and territories is leaving people with a lot of uncertainty, and could create inequality across the country.
"It's really disappointing, honestly," said Liz Thompson, advocacy lead for Cover Contraception.

Auto theft sees sharp drop in first half of 2025, industry association says
The pace of auto theft is dropping in Canada thanks to collective efforts to crack down on thieves, says an industry group focused on insurance fraud and crime.
Équité Association said in a report released Monday that the number of vehicles reported stolen nationally dropped 19.1 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
Just over 23,000 vehicles were reported stolen in the first six months of the year in Canada, the report said.
China may soon open its doors to Australian canola

Canada’s canola growers could soon be facing stiff competition in their top seed market.
Reuters is reporting that Australia is close to finalizing an agreement that will reopen the Chinese market to canola shipments from Down Under.
The world’s second-largest canola exporter has been shut out of the largest import market since 2020 due to phytosanitary requirements aimed at preventing the spread of blackleg disease.
Storms and smoke in the forecast for an unsettled week in the southeast
This week, the weather is making up for some lost moisture with plenty of storm systems on the horizon. That began over the weekend, with a series of systems dumping around 20-30 millimetres of rain over the area over a few days.
Now we'll see some more moisture, with Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Crawford Luke going over the climate for the final week of July.

Team Canada competed with determination and skill at the 2025 Junior Roller Derby World Cup, held July 26 to 28 at Mount Warren Sports Centre in Queensland, Australia.
Among the team was Estevan’s own Cecilia McCaskill, representing the Southeast on the international stage.
Playing in the Open Division, Canada showed strong teamwork and fast-paced action in a series of exciting matches.

Air Quality Warning issued for southern Saskatchewan
A new cloud of smoke has drifted into the southeast, and Environment and Climate Change Canada has sent out an air quality warning for the area.
In their warning, they state that smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility today, with more haze expected to stick around tomorrow.
Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke are likely to fluctuate between locations, with that thinning and thickening hour to hour.
Lightning strike prompts water conservation measures in Oxbow
The Town of Oxbow is asking residents and businesses to cut back on water usage after a lightning strike caused electrical damage at the community’s Water Treatment Plant early Sunday morning.
The unexpected incident has temporarily reduced the plant’s ability to treat and distribute water at normal levels. In a notice issued Monday by Town Administrator Brandi Morissette, the town urged everyone to conserve water until further notice.
