Man charged after altercation with police in Richmound

A 61-year-old man is facing a list of charges, including assaulting a peace officer, following an incident in Richmound last Friday. 

This Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP announced that Ricky Manz of Richmound has been charged with one count of assault, two counts of assaulting a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, one count of mischief, one count of uttering threats, and one count of obstructing or interfering with an employee or agency of a municipality.  

SPSA calls on federal help while latest update shows new wildfires popping up

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency's (SPSA) latest update shows that they're now looking for help from national sources to deal with the ongoing wildfires. 

The most recent update detailed that 56 active wildfires are burning in Saskatchewan, 14 of which are contained, 18 are under ongoing assessment, and firefighters are working to protect values in another 18. Four fires are considered contained.

Saskatchewan expands access to Active Families Benefit

Families in Saskatchewan with children participating in sport, culture or recreation can access the Active Families Benefit, a refundable tax credit designed to help make those activities more affordable.

As of this year, the benefit has doubled to $300 per child, or $400 per child for those eligible for the federal Child Disability Tax Credit. It is now available to families with a gross income of $120,000 or less.

Jack Harbourne Memorial Tournament kicks off today to determine best in Saskota Men's Baseball League

Baseball in the southeast will reach its peak this weekend as the Saskota Men's Baseball League hosts the Jack Harbourne Memorial Tournament. The event pits the eight top teams against each other to see who comes out on top.

Riley Singleton, the president of the league, says action will take place across the southeast beginning tonight.

Lions Club shares update on permanent rink project at Rusty Duce Park

As work continues on bringing a permanent rink to Rusty Duce Park, Estevan Lions Club member Travis Olver shared new details about the project and what it will mean for the community.

“I've kind of been on the forefront of the project with the Estevan Lions Club as a member, and we sparked out on this project close to two years ago and worked with the City to get it rolling. It's hopefully in place for this winter,” said Olver.

The rink will be designed for multi-season use.

Estevan Mayor hopes better connections between provinces leads to shovels in the ground

The province has been busy with Memoranda of Understanding and other agreements between itself and other provinces, as inter-provincial trade is a key concern for many jurisdictions in Canada. The three recent signings include those focused on labour, critical minerals, and a Northern Trade Corridor.

For Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick, working with the surrounding provinces is good news as the southeast depends on moving exports out through those routes.

Elecs football calls for coaches ahead of 2025 season

With the high school football season fast approaching, the ECS Elecs are still on the lookout for a few more coaches to round out their staff.

Head coach Paul Duncan says the team is currently seeking three to four coaches for the upcoming season, with two volunteers already confirmed. The hope is to add a couple more, particularly to cover defensive positions.

"We're looking for some defensive specialists, guys that have backgrounds on the defensive side of the game," Duncan said. "However, at any point in time, we'll take whoever we can get."

Estevan rallies around “Help Aubrey Walk” fundraiser with family BBQ and pancake breakfast

A pair of back-to-back fundraisers is bringing the Estevan community together this weekend to support a four-year-old girl named Aubrey Dyck and her journey toward walking independently for the first time.

Aubrey, who was born with extremely tight Achilles tendons, has never walked on her own. Now, with a surgery booked in New Jersey for September 2025, her parents Kimberley and Tanner Dyck are working to raise $90,000 to help cover the cost of surgery, travel, therapy, and recovery.

Sentencing for Freedom Convoy leaders Lich, Barber scheduled for Oct. 7

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, two leaders of the Freedom Convoy protest, are scheduled to be sentenced for mischief on Oct. 7 in an Ottawa courtroom.

In addition to lengthy prison sentences, the Crown wants to seize Barber's truck, which was used in the protest.

A forfeiture hearing on that matter is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said Thursday she wants to rule on the mischief sentence and truck forfeiture at the same time so that she does not deliver "piecemeal" decisions.
