Party bikes and pot shops: Alberta loosens liquor and cannabis rules

Alberta uncorks new rules for liquor and cannabis use.

Alberta’s government is giving a boost to local liquor producers by allowing them to own, operate and sell their products on large-format bikes, commonly known as "party bikes."

Albertans out for a spin on a party bike or tavern tour will soon be able to sip locally made beer and spirits.

The province is updating regulations to allow small liquor producers to serve their own products on party bikes, removing an outdated barrier that had prevented them from promoting their own brands.

Traffic advisory issued for highway 4 north of Elrose due to culvert failure

A traffic delay has been reported on Highway 4 just north of Elrose, where a culvert failure is impacting travel in both directions.

According to the Highway Hotline, motorists can expect reduced speeds through the affected area as crews assess the situation. Drivers are being advised to slow down and proceed with caution.

The issue was also raised in a social media post by a local driver, who warned of a dangerous dip in the roadway that damaged her vehicle.

Hot days, cool events: Biggar’s summer calendar sizzles

A full slate of community events is on tap this July in Biggar, offering residents of all ages a chance to connect, create and keep active.

The Biggar Family Centre will continue to host its popular Clothing Exchange on July 5, 12 and 19, with additional programming throughout the month including Teen Group on July 11 and 25, Kids Craft Club and Tween Craft Club on July 15 and 29, as well as Toddler Craft Club and Adult Craft Club on July 20.

Heads up, helmets on: Saskatchewan ATV riders urged to prioritize safety this summer

With summer in full swing, the Saskatchewan All Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) is reminding all ATV enthusiasts to ride smart and gear up, starting with a properly fitted helmet.

“Wearing a helmet is the single most effective way to prevent brain injury and save lives while riding,” said John Meed, General Manager of SATVA. “Too many accidents result in serious head trauma that could have been avoided with the right safety gear.”

Recovery efforts underway in fire-affected communities

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) says it is working with communities and residents impacted by the early and challenging start to the 2025 wildfire season, helping them begin the recovery and rebuilding process.

The SPSA’s Recovery Task Team is coordinating the province’s efforts to assess community needs and provide support following wildfire damage. The team is made up of representatives from the SPSA as well as other provincial ministries, including Environment, Social Services, and Government Relations. Other ministries may be involved as needed.

Several southwest RMs declare states of emergency as drought intensifies

A growing number of rural municipalities in southwest Saskatchewan have declared states of emergency as relentless drought conditions continue to strain farms, ranches, and rural communities.

The RMs of Maple Creek, Fox Valley, and Enterprise have joined the RM of Big Stick in officially declaring emergencies due to extreme dryness, lack of feed, and increasing fire risk.

The unfolding drought has forced livestock producers to make difficult decisions, with many reducing herd sizes and stretching already tight resources. 

Saskatchewan hits a record high in yearly CT and MRI scans

Saskatchewan reached a major milestone in 2024–25 by delivering the highest-ever volume of CT and MRI scans in a single year, with over 250,000 exams completed across the province.

According to the province, 187,163 CT exams and 63,299 MRI exams were performed during the fiscal year, an increase of nine per cent compared to 2023–24. More than 206,000 patients received diagnostic imaging, with health officials crediting increased investment and expanded service delivery for the boost.

Sylvan Lake RCMP on scene at serious motor vehicle collision

Sylvan Lake RCMP are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision at Highway 12 and Highway 766. 

Traffic in all directions is currently affected. 

RCMP anticipate remaining on scene for several hours.
