Recent heavy rains leaves Mennonite Heritage Village fence down and community gardens flooded

The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) Museum in Steinbach was left with a damaged fence and soggy gardens after last week’s heavy rainfall. Thankfully, their historic buildings and Village Centre were spared from flooding. 

Executive Director Robert Goertzen says the museum’s pond is tied into Steinbach’s creek and drainage system, which swelled quickly with the downpour. 

Traffic stop in Winkler leads to impaired driving, and firearms charges

A 26-year-old Gretna man is facing multiple charges after police attempted a traffic stop in Winkler on the evening of September 7th.

Around 8:40 p.m., officers on patrol observed a vehicle turning onto Main Street, accelerating loudly and emitting a large cloud of black smoke. When police attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop, accelerated through a stop sign, and led officers on a brief pursuit.

Sobeys Rocky View Distribution Centre workers may strike Thursday after lockout notice

Warehouse, distribution and transportation workers at Sobeys Rocky View Distribution Centre near Balzac may strike as of 3:01 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, Teamsters Local Union 987 said Wednesday.

The union, which represents some 251 individuals employed at the facility, said it issued a 72-hour strike notice on Monday after the employer issued a lockout notice. The distribution hub is formally known as Sobeys Capital Inc. Rocky View Retail Support Centre.

SaskEnergy lowers energy bills through new furnace replacement program

SaskEnergy is introducing a new Heating Affordability Program (HAP), helping homeowners facing financial barriers lower their heating costs. Their new furnace replacement program will provide new high-efficiency furnaces to eligible income-qualified households, free of charge. 

Older, lower-efficiency heating equipment results in higher energy bills as more fuel is used to provide the same amount of heat as a high-efficiency model. With a new high-efficiency furnace, customers can save up to $650 on natural gas and energy costs every year.  

Late summer storm a costly one in SGI claims

A tail end summer storm that swept through Regina and surrounding areas is being called one of the most significant of the summer for auto-related insurance claims. 

As of Monday afternoon, SGI reported more than 513 auto claims linked to the storm, which hit communities including Regina, Pilot Butte, Emerald Park, and Balgonie. The damage includes vehicles impacted by hail and flooding, according to Heather Hubic, SGI's Manager of Media Relations. 

New Municipal Development Plan sets Rocky View County’s future

Rocky View County (RVC) Council has approved a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP). The plan will guide how the County grows and develops over the next 20 years. 

According to RVC, the newly approved MDP replaces the previous plan, referred to as the ‘County Plan,’ and introduces a forward-looking, community-specific approach to development. The plan sets out clear objectives and policies governing land use, infrastructure, services, and environmental stewardship, all grounded in public feedback and best planning practices.

More than 4,000lb raised from Community Wide Food Drive for the Wheatland County Food Bank

The fourth annual Wheatland County Food Bank's Community Wide Food Drive took place over the weekend.

The Food Bank gave out tags to residents and encouraged them to put food out on their doorsteps on Saturday (Sept. 13) morning.

Executive director of the Wheatland County Food Bank, Lynette Aschenbrenner, explained why the event is important.

Two local thefts, one day: WPS recover stolen goods

The Weyburn Police Service responded to two thefts from local businesses last Monday. The first incident involved a woman stealing medication from a store. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says the woman involved was not a first-time offender, however, no charges were laid. 

“It's been happening off and on with this individual for some time. They figured the best option in this situation, knowing the circumstances of it, which I won't get into here, is just to ban that person from the store.” 

Change in name and location just the start of a busy year for Prairie Gateway Settlement Services

Regardless of shifting policies around immigration intake and accompanying funding mechanisms, the Prairie Gateway Settlement Services (formerly the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Center), has carried on in a rock steady fashion over the last year in providing quality service to new settlers in the area. As part of its reporting at the Annual General Meeting on September 15 in its new offices at 606 9th St. in Humboldt, the number is showing the highest new to region clients in the organization's history.
