Experience Saskatchewan sport fishing as annual Free Fishing Weekend returns

Saskatchewan's annual summer Free Fishing Weekend is set for July 12th to 13th, where everyone in the province can experience recreational fishing on our lakes and rivers without an angling license.  

This is the 36th Free Fishing Weekend since it began in 1989. According to a release sent by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, the event is designed to allow people to discover the diverse fishing opportunities in the province without paying the fee for a license. 

Scheduled maintenance will cause a gymnasium closure in Okotoks

Those who enjoy heading to the gymnasium in Okotoks may need to find a new place to go for a few days.

The gymnasium at the Okotoks Rec Centre is closed from today (July 3) until July 6, so they can complete some scheduled maintenance.

It will be reopened for everyone to enjoy on July 7.

Lowered age requirement for breast cancer screening eligibility

 

Earlier this week, a change was made to Breast Cancer screening eligibility was made for women in Saskatchewan, with required age lowered to 45-years-old.  

This change is part of a strategy to lower the screening age within the province to 40-years-old within the next 12 months. Lowering the screening age is aimed towards detecting breast cancer at an earlier age.  

Heat Warnings in place, with Severe Thunderstorm risk Thursday

After flirting with hot and humid the last couple of days, we are now officially into that with Environment Canada issuing Heat Warnings for all of Southern Manitoba. Today and Friday look like they will be the most humid days of the Summer, so far, with it feeling like nearly 40 at times as daytime highs push to 31 to 33 degrees.

Speeding teen slapped with $921 fine on Highway 14

A trio of situations on local highways headlined this week's Biggar RCMP report, however, one report regarding a young individual with a lead foot stole the spotlight.

Immediately sticking out in the report was police clocking a vehicle speeding at 161 km/h on Highway 14. Behind the wheel of the crossover SUV was an 18-year-old who hopefully learned their lesson after being hit with a hefty fine of $921, not the first of its kind in the area over recent months.

New Rivercrest School to break ground in 2026

Cochrane is one step closer to getting a much-needed new school, as Rocky View Schools (RVS) announced progress on a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school planned for the Rivercrest neighbourhood.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the school scheduled to open in fall 2028. The project was approved as part of Alberta’s 2024 provincial budget and will help ease growing enrolment pressures across Cochrane.

Crash near Carman sends three to hospital, fire crews respond

Emergency crews rushed to a serious crash east of Carman on Wednesday morning, sending three people to hospital and shutting down a major highway for over an hour.

The Carman Dufferin Fire Department (CDFD) responded around 9:59 a.m. to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 3, just east of town.

According to the department, a westbound minivan entered the eastbound lane, narrowly avoiding one pickup truck before striking a second.

“The truck flipped onto its roof and slid into the north ditch of the highway,” the department says in a social media post.
