Lindsay Thurber’s third annual MegaBowl supports Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School (LTCHS) hosted its third annual MegaBowl – a hockey game pitting staff against students – on March 26 at the Servus Arena in Red Deer.

The competition was friendly and a huge success, with this year’s event raising $7,023 in support of the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES).

The event, which brings together the school and community in a display of teamwork and school pride, was organized by LTCHS teachers Mark Graham, Ryan Hunter, and Turner Lachance.

AHS issues public alert for confirmed measles case in the Calgary Zone

Alberta Health Services is notifying the public of a confirmed case of measles in the Calgary Zone.

The Calgary Zone includes the City of Calgary and surrounding regions including Okotoks and High River, spanning as far south as Claresholm and Didsbury to the north.

According to the AHS advisory, there were potential exposures in the Calgary, Banff, and Canmore areas between April 6 and 11.

The possible exposure locations and times are as follows: 

Teen arrested after stolen vehicle chase near Sandy Bay 

A police pursuit near Sandy Bay First Nation has resulted in multiple weapons charges being laid against a 17-year-old after officers recovered firearms from a stolen vehicle. 

On April 6th, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) was alerted by the RCMP to be on the lookout for two stolen trucks believed to be traveling toward the Sandy Bay community. Officers soon located the suspect vehicles — a white Ford truck and a Dodge truck — on Highway 50 near Langruth. 

AHS: Measles case prompts public warning of potential exposures in Calgary region

On Tuesday, Alberta Health Services (AHS) said a confirmed case of measles in the Calgary Zone has led to possible public exposures in Canmore, Banff and Calgary.

"This case has been in public settings in Canmore, Banff and Calgary while infectious," AHS added.

Individuals who were in the following locations during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to measles:

April 6 — Canmore
Save-On-Foods, 950 Railway Ave. #2
From about 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

How much of an increase will Strathmore residents see on their property tax bills?

Property owners will see a significant increase in their property tax bills this year.

According to the Town of Strathmore, it's due to a rise in the provincial education property tax requisition in the 2025 Alberta Budget.

"The budget, released by Finance Minister Nate Horner on February 27, increases Strathmore’s total school tax requisition by 22 per cent, from $5,953,657 million in 2024 to $7,251,997 million in 2025," said a release from the town.

Memory of Outlook man killed fighting for Ukraine honoured with medal ceremony

A well-attended ceremony in Outlook over the weekend honoured the memory of Winton “Bud” Hardy, who was killed by a Russian drone in Ukraine in June 2024 while serving as a combat medic — Hardy’s family was presented with the Ukrainian Canadian Sacrifice Medal in thanks for his service. 

Pat Tymchatyn, president of the Saskatoon branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, explained that the Ukrainian Canadian Sacrifice Medal was created specifically for volunteers like Bud Hardy. 

Project Glacier dismantles Grande Prairie criminal organization

Six people have been charged in an extensive organized crime investigation in Grande Prairie. ALERT alleges the group was involved in drug trafficking throughout the surrounding area.
 
Project Glacier was a two-year investigation led by ALERT Grande Prairie’s organized crime team. The investigation concluded on March 13, 2025 with six suspects being charged with a combined 22 criminal offences.
 

Local churches set up for Easter services, mass, and more

Swift Current and area residents and families can enjoy a wide range of Easter services this week from over half a dozen different local churches.

The Swift Current Comprehensive High School will host a Good Friday service in the gymnasium on April 18 at 10:30 a.m. with several groups and churches.

Trailview Alliance and Bridgeway Church will both participate in the Good Friday service at the Comp, sponsored by Swift Current Ministerial, and each will hold a Sunday service at 10:30 a.m.
