Supercells in the forecast: Prairie storm risk ramps up with potential for tornadoes

Residents near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border are being urged to keep an eye on the skies this week, as conditions continue to build for severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging wind gusts, and even a tornado or two.

A cold front and warm-sector trough are pushing southward through the Prairie provinces, drawing moisture into southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The result? A recipe for strong storms, particularly in areas from Medicine Hat east through Maple Creek, Hannah, and Oyen.

Forecasters expect thunderstorms to develop late in the afternoon.

Security teardown in progress as G7 concludes

As world leaders depart Canada following the 2025 G7 Summit, federal officials say residents should expect continued police presence and traffic disruptions during the demobilization process.

The Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) announced on Tuesday that crews are now clearing equipment, removing police vehicles, dismantling security operations, and conducting environmental remediation at designated sites.

Joint effort saves 75 dogs during Cross Lake wildfire evacuation

As wildfires forced residents of Cross Lake to evacuate earlier this month, RCMP officers and animal rescue teams stepped in to ensure the community’s pets weren’t left behind.

With approval from Cross Lake Chief David Monais and Health Director Helga Hamilton, Manitoba Underdogs Rescue volunteers, with help from Cross Lake RCMP, brought vulnerable dogs to Winnipeg for care.

"These dogs would not have survived the evacuation period," Manitoba RCMP said in a post on Facebook. 

Voting still open for Rosetown Kinsmen $25,000 grant

There is less than a week left to vote for Rosetown's all-inclusive playground project to receive funding in the form of a $25,000 grant. 

The Kinsmen Club of Rosetown knows the funding would mark a major step towards Phase 2 bringing various amenities and even a new piece of play equipment. Airdrie talent to join Stampede breakfast as Calgary mall flips for world record

CF Chinook Centre is aiming to flip its way into the record books this Stampede — and an Airdrie teen will help keep the crowd entertained.

The mall’s 65th annual Stampede Pancake Breakfast, set for Saturday, July 5, includes an official attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Pancakes Served” at a single event. More than 25,000 people are expected to attend the free, rain-or-shine celebration between 7 and 11 a.m. in the east parking lot between Chapters and Yeti.

Extended rainfall expected in Foothills County starting Friday

Southern Alberta is due for some heavy rain this weekend, including in Foothills County.

"What we're expecting this weekend is a cool and soggy one across much of Southern Alberta, including the Okotoks area," said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "Rain [will] begin through the day on Friday and really not let up through almost the entirety of the weekend. By Sunday evening, things should start to ease up, and you'll start to see some relief."

Pair charged in incident that damaged Melfort RCMP vehicles

Melfort RCMP has charged two individuals following an investigation that determined a truck they were in control of damaged police vehicles in the Melfort RCMP detachment parking lot. 

Melfort RCMP received a report on June 16 at approximately 9:30 pm that a truck was striking vehicles at the detachment.  

Officers immediately responded. Investigation determined a truck was driving around the area erratically and struck three parked police vehicles and two dumpsters.
