Some Red Deer students start school Thursday

A Red Deer Catholic school is welcoming 578 students Thursday as part of its staggered start to the 2025–26 school year.

St. Patrick’s Community School, the only year-round school in Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, will welcome students back tomorrow. According to the school, the year-round education model is designed to offer a holistic and enriching learning experience. 

The K–9 school says that with more frequent breaks throughout the year, students can better retain what they’ve learned and enjoy a smoother transition into the next grade.

RCMP seek information on rural theft near Griffin

The Weyburn/Fillmore RCMP have issued a crime watch advisory following a rural break, enter, and theft in the RM of Griffin. 

The incident occurred between Sunday, August 3rd and Wednesday August 6th, when an unknown person entered an unoccupied property in the RM of Griffin. There, they stole a 2018 American tandem axle enclosed trailer with Saskatchewan license plate 249KTV. The trailer contained a Can-Am ATV, John Deere ride-on mower, a green coloured generator, and various tools. 

The RCMP have provided photos of the stolen items. 

Real Canadian Wrestling ends Stampede Smackdown with a bang

Real Canadian Wrestling (RCW) held its Stampede Smackdown over the weekend.

The event took place on Sunday (Aug. 3) night at the Strathmore Family Centre and included several wrestling matches featuring both new and returning talent.

The event concluded with a "Strathmore street fight" tag team match featuring Old School Violence, which includes Strathmore-based wrestler Steve Wilde. In the match, Wilde reclaimed the tag team championship belt after losing it earlier this year.

Progress continues on Glenpatrick Drive reconstruction project

If you've been away from town and are getting back into your regular routine, you'll want to refrain from turning onto Glenpatrick Dr. from 5th Ave. A major section is closed that will prevent you from using that route, unless you're destination is Cascade Place.

Work is progressing steadily on the Town of Cochrane’s two-year, $15-million reconstruction of Glenpatrick Drive, with underground utility installations now complete in the second segment of the project.

Long days ahead: Local farmer comments on upcoming harvest season

While summer is not over yet, a new season is beginning as local farmers prepare for the harvest. However, efforts may be delayed due to the cooler and wetter growing season. 

Dale Paslawski, who farms north of Weyburn, says crops are advancing well, but slightly behind in development. He has already begun swathing yellow peas but had to take a break due to the forecasted showers.  

Local woman has $250,000 pay day

A woman from Oakbank has won a quarter of a million dollars. 

Kori Van Ryssel won $250,000 on EXTRA.

The Oakbank resident says she checked a few tickets while at the gas station and was stunned to learn that one of them was a major winner.

"It was complete shock," she says. "I still can't believe it."

Van Ryssel says she does not have much planned for her new windfall, but notes she is excited by what it represents. 

"I just keep saying, 'This is breathing room,'" says Van Ryssel. "I'm going to pay off a few bills and then just sit on the rest."

City sees hump day road closure

The City of Swift Current advised residents of a road closure on Wednesday, August 6.

Twelfth Avenue North East and Bell Street East will be closed to accommodate the replacement of a catch basin.

Folks are asked to watch for detours and signage that will be posted.

Structure fire false alarm prompts safety reminder: WPS

In the afternoon of July 28th, the Weyburn Police Service were called to the scene of a possible structure fire alongside the Weyburn Fire Department. Upon arrival, they did see smoke coming from the residence, however, Sergeant Riley Ross explains it was not a structure fire. 

“It was determined that it wasn't a structure fire and that it was located in a garbage can in the residence, and a cigarette was inside the garbage can that started smoke within the house.”
