Thirty below temperatures coming to Strathmore over the weekend

There's a frostbite risk entering Strathmore over the weekend.

According to our forecast, the evening on Friday (Jan. 17) will bring in light snow and 50 km/h gusts of wind, making the overnight low of -20°C feel closer to -29°C with the wind chill.

Saturday keeps the wind around with partly cloudy skies that clear in the morning. There are also expected to be flurries with a high of -17°C with a wind chill of -30°C in the morning and -24°C in the afternoon. 

Saturday night calls for clear skies and a low of -29°C.

Why are gas prices rising this year in Strathmore?

Gas prices in Strathmore are rising this year.

According to GasBuddy, the highest gas prices in town at the time of publication are $154.9 at several spots including Husky, Shell, Petro, and Co-op.

The lowest price in town can be found at UFA for $149.4.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis with GasBuddy, explained to StrathmoreNow why residents are paying more at the pumps.

It's expected to stay cold throughout the weekend, however there are still a few events for residents to take in.

Here are five fun things to do in Strathmore and the surrounding area.

Mad Hatters Cornhole Club League Play: Cornhole players in Strathmore will host an information table at Peavey Mart on Saturday (Jan. 18) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone who wants to know more about the club and the league. Following that on Sunday, there will be league play at Trinity Christian Academy in Strathmore starting at 2 p.m.

Get ready to name that tune next weekend

If you feel confident about your song-naming skills, then you're in luck because Name that Tune is returning to Strathmore on Saturday (Jan. 25).

Deseray Lavallee general manager at the Strathmore Boston Pizza says there will be a ton of genres to play with.

"The genres this time will be 80s hair bands, classic country Billboard Top 100, One Hit Wonder, 90s hip hop, and 2000 hits."

The first thirty seconds of the song will be played before you guess.

If you place first, second, or third you'll walk away with a prize.

Alberta RCMP report nearly 150 crashes during winter storm

RCMP responded to 149 crashes throughout Alberta during the winter storm that hit the province on Thursday (Jan. 16).

Police warned drivers to stay off the road that evening as bad weather caused dangerous road conditions across the province. According to RCMP, the majority of the reported collisions were in central Alberta.

Wind warning and blowing snow advisory end in Strathmore

A wind warning and blowing snow advisory wrapped up on Friday (Jan. 17).

The warning and advisory were issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on Thursday afternoon as 90 km/h winds came to Wheatland County along with light flurries.

The weather also affected the areas of Strathmore, Lyalta, and Carseland. 

Local RCMP advised residents of extremely poor driving conditions overnight due to the snow and wind.

Chrystia Freeland will run to be next Liberal leader

Chrystia Freeland is running to be the next Leader of the Liberal party and prime minister of Canada.

She says in a statement posted on social media she will launch her campaign officially on Sunday.

SaskCanola and SaskFlax merge into the brand new SaskOilSeeds

Yesterday, at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show in Saskatoon, SK, a new brand was announced. SaskCanola and SaskFlax announced that they would be amalgamating under one brand called SaskOilSeeds. While this amalgamation isn’t brand new, in fact, they officially merged together on August 1st, 2024, this announcement marks a new chapter in oilseeds for producers in Saskatchewan. Tracy Broughton is the executive director of the new SaskOilSeeds brand, and she talks about why this merger was needed, and how it will help producers of Saskatchewan oilseeds in the future. 

Mark Carney launches campaign for Liberal leadership

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney says he’s ready to replace Justin Trudeau and lead the Liberal party into the next election.

He made the announcement at a community centre in Edmonton Thursday afternoon, ending nearly a decade of speculation about his political ambitions.

"I'm back home in Edmonton to declare my candidacy for leader of the Liberal party and prime minister of Canada," Carney said, flanked by supporters and Liberal members of Parliament endorsing his candidacy.
