Venue change for inauguration means Alberta premier will miss in-person ceremony

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith won't be at president-elect Donald Trump's inaugural ceremony on Monday after all, due to bitter cold weather forecasted for tomorrow in Washington, D.C.

Smith, who is spending five days in Washington on a diplomatic trip, was scheduled to attend the event.

But her press secretary, Sam Blackett, says in a statement that most ticketed guests will no longer be able to attend the ceremony in-person because it's being moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda, and that includes Smith.

More than 60 ill, 17 hospitalized in salmonella outbreak linked to mini pastries

The Public Health Agency of Canada says 61 cases of salmonella across the country, including 17 that have required hospitalization, have been linked to recalled mini pastries.

The agency said the Sweet Cream brand mini pastries have been distributed at bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, retirement residences, and catered events.

It said 33 of the 61 illnesses are in Quebec, 21 in Ontario, four in British Columbia, two in Alberta and one in New Brunswick.

Canadian politicians are descending on Washington, D.C., amid threats of 25 per cent tariffs when Donald Trump returns to the White House. Many are going to an event at the Canadian Embassy, which sits on Pennsylvania Avenue between the U.S. Capitol and the White House. Siksika Nation ready to hit the ice for hockey fundraiser

Siksika Nation is hosting a special night of hockey at the Deerfoot Sportsplex.

According to a news release, members of the Siksika Buffaloes will take on first responders from the nation during the friendly game.

The event runs on Friday (Feb. 7) with the opening ceremony starting at 7:45 p.m. and puck drop going at 8 p.m.

Staff with Siksika say fundraising for the initiative will help out Siksika Nation High School Grade 9 grads.

Extreme cold warning ends in Strathmore and area

The extreme cold warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on Saturday (Jan. 18) has ended.

The warning was issued as wind chills between -40°C and -45°C entered the area over the weekend.

ECCC ended the warning earlier than expected, with the group calling for temperatures to warm up on Monday afternoon.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when temperatures bring the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Liberal House Leader Karina Gould says she's running for party leadership

Government House Leader Karina Gould says she’s ready to throw her hat in the ring to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader.

Gould says in a video posted to social media that Canadians have lost faith in the party and the Liberals need to earn back their trust.

She says the party needs to rebuild with a leader who has a track record of standing up to bullies and won’t back down.

The 37-year-old millennial is the youngest candidate to declare, just days before the official deadline to enter the race.

Local restaurant raises money for Wheatland County Food Bank

The Wheatland County Food Bank received a generous donation on Friday (Jan. 17).

Strathmore Boston Pizza raised $2,500 for the food bank for their Kid's Card campaign.

The tradition has been going on for thirty years across Boston Pizza restaurants in Canada.

Maclean says the restaurant chose the food bank because they wanted to give back to the community.

"It's just a local charity within our community here and we wanted to find a way to give back to the people that are around day in and day out."

Thirty below temperatures coming to Strathmore over the weekend

There's a frostbite risk entering Strathmore over the weekend.

According to our forecast, the evening on Friday (Jan. 17) will bring in light snow and 50 km/h gusts of wind, making the overnight low of -20°C feel closer to -29°C with the wind chill.

Saturday keeps the wind around with partly cloudy skies that clear in the morning. There are also expected to be flurries with a high of -17°C with a wind chill of -30°C in the morning and -24°C in the afternoon. 

Saturday night calls for clear skies and a low of -29°C.
