Strathmore to host women's football camp in January

The South Calgary Female Colts tackle football team features both U16 and U19 teams and the group is looking for more girls to join in on the fun.

There are two teams in Calgary split north and south along with the east outlying areas including Strathmore, Chestermere, and Langdon.

"There's not firm boundaries, but we're just kind of trying to incorporate everybody and kind of get as furthest reach as possible," mentioned Tatrina Medvescek, head coach of the organization.

One impaired driver busted at Candy Cane Checkstop in Chestermere

Chestermere RCMP were alongside local firefighters for the Candy Cane Checkstop in the city.

The event ran from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 17) at Chestermere Boulevard, with around 400 vehicles going through to learn about safe winter driving.

"We're greeting the public and giving back to them for driving safely during the holiday season," said Eli Steinfeld with municipal enforcement. "Our primary goal is to say thank you and let people know about safe ways to get home."

Nominations for Women in Agriculture Award close December 31

The deadline to nominate a deserving woman in agriculture is coming up fast.

The Women in Agriculture Award is run by the Wheatland County's Agriculture and Environment department.

"Nominate an outstanding woman in agriculture who inspires with her dedication, innovation, and impact in farming or ranching," wrote the county in a news release. "Whether she’s breaking new ground in sustainability, supporting rural communities, or leading the way in agricultural technology, we want to celebrate her achievements and contributions to our agricultural community."

Our Volunteer of the Month for December is...

We have crowned our last Volunteer of the Month for 2024, and it goes to Tyler Hille!

Hille is the treasurer and board director of the Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce (SWCC).

"The Chamber is an organization here to help businesses in the community, so we help businesses connect," explained Hille.

Hille says he joined the SWCC to get involved more with the community.

"I jumped on and used that as an opportunity to get more involved in the community and help, you know, steer the business community."

Siksika Nation sues Alberta government over plan to expand Ghost Reservoir project

Siksika Nation has filed a lawsuit against the Alberta government over its plan to expand the Ghost Reservoir and build a new dam.

The nation says they were not properly consulted before the province went ahead with the project.

According to the band, the project would hurt its treaty rights on the Bow River and that's why a lawsuit was sent to the Alberta Court of King's Bench.

The nation called the decision both "unconstitutional and unreasonable."

Strathmore Town Council cancels December 18 meeting

Strathmore Town Council has cancelled its meeting for Wednesday (Dec. 18).

According to the town, the meeting was cancelled on December 4.

Town council will resume after the New Year, with the next meeting scheduled for January 15.

It will be a Committee of the Whole Meeting, which provides councillors an opportunity to engage in a less formal, discussion-oriented matter.

Chestermere cracks list of most generous cities in Canada

The City of Chestermere has cracked the top 200 most-populated cities in Canada for donating to charities.

The report from CanadaHelps analyzed the numbers based on donations given per population of each city.

Chestermere came in at 117 on the report.

Coming in first place was Centre Wellington, Ontario with 6.27 per cent of residents donating.

The report also mentioned that Alberta came in fifth place for most generous provinces with 2.05 per cent of residents having donated, moving up from the sixth spot in 2023.

Justin Trudeau 'taking the time to reflect' following Freeland departure ▶️

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking some time to reflect after Chrystia Freeland's bombshell resignation, the natural resources minister said on Tuesday.

"The prime minister, as I understand it, a number of caucus colleagues have said that the prime minister has said that he will reflect on both the decision that minister Freeland made, but also what he's heard from members of his own caucus," Jonathan Wilkinson said.

"I think we all need to give him a little time to reflect, and I respect that fact that he's going to take some time to reflect."
