Snow causing poor driving conditions

With the snow from yesterday and today piling up, Alberta RCMP is advising to drive with caution on the QEII from Olds to Airdrie.

The QEII has been reported to have icy patches and be snow-covered. It is recommended to postpone travel if possible.

There have been reports of vehicles stuck in the ditch along the QEII between Olds and Airdrie.

The snow is supposed to last until this evening.

Plenty of snow expected today for Airdrie

Environment and Climate Change Canada has placed a snowfall warning for Airdrie and its surrounding area.

The snowfall warning is in effect for:

  • Airdrie
  • Crossfield
  • Bottrel
  • Madden
  • Cochrane

Heavy snow has developed this morning and will continue through the day before tapering off this evening.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres are expected.

Update: Airdrie roads become slippery as snowfall warning continues

Highways both Southbound and Northbound of Airdrie are becoming slick as snow continues to fall on Thursday morning.

The QEII Southbound towards Calgary is partly covered in snow and there may be shoulder ice, along with icy wheel paths and slushy sections, while heading Northbound towards Crossfield and Carstairs, there are reports of freezing rain mixed with snow. However, those travelling East of Airdrie towards Beiseker on Highway 72 can expect the highway to be covered in snow with shoulder ice and slippery sections as well.

Update: Reports of vehicle fire north of Airdrie

A vehicle fire that occurred north of Airdrie near Crossfield has been cleared.

Previously, it was reported that there were lane closures and speed reductions in the Northbound lanes of the QEII at Highway 72. Emergency crews were reported to be on the scene.

There may be residual traffic congestion in the area. No details of injuries were available.

Shopping craze and snow may impact roads

With light snow falling in Airdrie and the surrounding areas, along with an increased volume of traffic due to continued Black Friday shopping deals, motorists are asked to exercise caution on the roads on Saturday.

Though no collisions have been reported on Saturday afternoon on the QEII or in Airdrie, motorists have reported that traffic is heavier and slow-going North and Southbound on the QEII near the CrossIron Mills shopping mall

Wildlife collision near Airdrie prompts warning

Airdrie RCMP confirmed that earlier this week, on the evening of Monday, November 20, police responded to a vehicle collision involving a deer.

According to witnesses, the collision occurred northbound on the QEII near Airdrie. Witnesses reported fire trucks had attended the scene along with an ambulance. It wasn't immediately clear what kind of injuries were sustained by the driver of the vehicle, though some motorists reported seeing an individual with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Province: Photo radar changes coming next month

The province has announced that beginning next month, on December 1, the government will be taking the first steps to ban photo radar on ring roads in Calgary on Stoney Trail and in Edmonton on Anthony Henday Drive.

"At the same time, Alberta’s government will be engaging with municipalities and law enforcement over the next year on removing all “fishing hole” locations across the province. Albertans can be confident that going forward, photo radar will only be used to improve traffic safety," the province stated.
