'Get your voice out there': Weyburn Youth Council seeking new members

The City of Weyburn is encouraging youths in Grades 10, 11, or 12 to get involved in local government and have a voice in the community by joining the Weyburn Youth Council.

Members of Weyburn Youth Council take part in City Council meetings, gain an understanding of how municipal government works, and represent the voice of Weyburn’s youth on a number of important topics.

WPS remind owners to keep dogs leashed and secure

The Weyburn Police Service took to Facebook this week issuing a reminder to local dog owners. They report a number of calls regarding loose dogs running at large, noting that while many local dogs are friendly, there were some incidents where this was not the case. 

Deputy Chief Shane St. John adds that even friendly dogs can be unpredictable. 

Something for everyone in Weyburn this weekend

As summer is still firmly gripping the Weyburn area this weekend, a lot is going on, with something for everyone, including sports fans and treasure hunters.

The Red Wings Alumni game is being held tonight at the Whitecap Resources Centre, featuring former players from throughout the years taking to the ice. There is no admission fee for the game, which will feature players from throughout the history of the team. The puck drops at 7 p.m. 

'It went rather peacefully' WPS school zone patrols prove effective

School has been back in session for nearly two weeks, and the Weyburn Police Service is reporting a good start to the year in terms of school zone driving safety. Officers were conducting extra patrols in these areas and Deputy Chief Shane St. John says for the most part, people were driving responsibly, but some warnings and tickets were issued.  

Extreme weather, U.S. funding cuts add pressure for Canada's weather service: report

Canada has a need for a co-ordinated flash flood warning system and could deepen its European partnerships as the United States cuts climate- and weather-related funding, says a new report digging into the future of Canada's weather service. 

The independent assessment prepared for Environment and Climate Change Canada says significant cuts to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration threaten a wide range of weather and water monitoring in Canada, from the Arctic to the Great Lakes. 

Ministers ask senior officials to review procurement contracts, find savings

Canada's ministers of finance and procurement have given officials in charge of most federal contracting 45 days to come up with a plan to review all existing and planned federal contracts to find ways to save money.

The directive made by Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Public Works and Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound is the latest cost-savings directive from the federal cabinet as Prime Minister Mark Carney looks to cut government operating spending by 15 per cent over the next three years.

Players acquitted in Hockey Canada sex assault trial can return to NHL

The five players acquitted in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial can return to the NHL when their suspensions end "no sooner" than Dec. 1, the NHL announced Thursday.

The players, who are all unrestricted free agents, can sign with a team on Oct. 15 as they wait for full reinstatement.

Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton and Carter Hart were all charged with one count of sexual assault stemming from an encounter with a woman after a 2018 gala celebrating the world junior team's gold medal. All five pleaded not guilty when the trial opened in April.

Senior Men's League caddies more funds for WGC irrigation project

The Weyburn Golf Club Senior Men's held their windup on September 11th, after which they presented a $2,000 cheque to the Weyburn Golf Club's General Manager, Krystle Fedoretz.

The Executive for this year were Don McKinnon, Don Ruckaber, and George Mcleod. 

According to the 50/50 Chairperson, Murray Benson, the funds were a donation to the WGC Front Irrigation Fund to help pay off the loan on the project. The five-year total raised by the Senior Men for the Irrigation Project is now $8,200.

Grain Rush: Randy Scott takes a chicken break due to rain, hail

Grain Rush, driven by Great Plains Ford, headed all the way to south of Khedive today to the Scott farm, as Randy Scott and his crew were the winners of some delicious KFC, thanks to Nelson Motors! 

Scott said he and his crew are plugging away, at a little over half done with taking off the crops of lentils and flax. He said it's been better this year than in the last few years.

Drought conditions improved last month in some areas of the prairies

Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada has updated its National Drought Monitor Map now that the stats are in from August (2025).

Trevor Hadwen, an agroclimate specialist with AAFC says drought conditions improved throughout western Canada; however, eastern Canada saw conditions deteriorate significantly.
