'Art is essential': Weyburn Arts Council scholarships support arts education

The Weyburn Arts Council awards the Millie Coghill Fine Arts Scholarship to adults taking multi-part classes or university classes in Fine Arts. 

Millie Coghill was a prolific multi-medium Weyburn-area artist for well over a generation, who was one of the creators of the Weyburn Wheel at the Weyburn Public Library. Her family started the scholarship after her passing, which is administered by the Weyburn Arts Council.

Poilievre's byelection win sets the table for his return to Parliament this fall

After a summer of rodeos, dinosaurs and door-knocking, Pierre Poilievre is now officially heading back to Ottawa as a Conservative member of Parliament for Alberta.

The Tory leader will represent the sprawling rural riding of Battle River—Crowfoot, in the province's eastern region, after winning a byelection on Monday. 

"Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life," Poilievre told a crowd at a victory party in Camrose, Alta., on Monday night. "In fact, I've had a hell of a lot of fun."

Flight attendants union says tentative deal reached to end Air Canada strike

Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have reached a tentative deal to end a strike that began on Saturday morning.

The airline said it will gradually begin operations Tuesday.

The two sides met through the night with a federal mediator before reaching a tentative agreement that will be brought to members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

"Your right to vote on your wages was preserved," the union said in a post on its website announcement the end of the strike.

Emergency crews on the scene of garage fire on 11th Street

The Weyburn Fire Department responded to a single-car garage fire in the 500 block of 11th Street northeast just after 3 p.m. on Monday.

According to a media release from the City of Weyburn, the fire is under control, no injuries were reported, and there is no risk to public safety.

However, as fire crews remain on scene continuing operations until the fire is fully extinguished, the public is asked to avoid the area to allow clear and safe access for emergency crews.

Red Wings count down to home opener with packed preseason schedule

The schedule is heating up while the ice is cooling off at Crescent Point Place, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings gear up for another action-packed hockey season. 

Fall Camp kicks off the on-ice activity, running from August 29th to September 1st. The top 40 players will then participate in the Eric Calibaba Cup on September 1st at 3 p.m. Fans can take advantage of $5 admission and a game day 50/50 for the first game of the preseason.

CCA President optimistic they can reach a deal with Alberta Beef Producers

The President of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) says he's optimistic that they can reach an agreement that will see the Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) remain part of the national organization.

Last week, ABP gave the CCA notice to withdraw from the national organization as of July 1, 2026, citing among its concerns the organization's funding model, board structure, and representation since Alberta producers contribute over 50 percent to the organization.

Tyler Fulton is optimistic they'll be able to agree on a workable solution for everyone.

Gifted Winter registration is open now

Makers of handmade goods can register now for the Gifted Winter Art Sale, taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 15th at the Spark Centre in the multi-purpose rooms and the Legacy Gym.

"It's one of the most celebrated events of the holiday season, and we are so excited that our registrations are already over a quarter full and it's not even the end of August," shared Acting Chair of the Weyburn Arts Council, Natasha Hill. Note: registration became 50 per cent full within two days of the original publication of this article.
