Pottery exhibition opens up at Weyburn Art Gallery; Throwdown winners announced

A reception was held Friday evening at the Weyburn Art Gallery for The Great Weyburn Pottery Throwdown, opening up an exhibition featuring works by members of the Weyburn Pottery Club. 

The ongoing, 10-month-long challenge leading up to the event was judged by Marilyn Nelson, Casey Kievits, and Chris Borschowa, who adjudicated the pieces in each round, scoring each of the works in four categories, each worth a possible 15 points: closeness to theme, technical merit, complexity, and aesthetics, for a total of 60 possible points.  

Arrests made in Lafleche break-and-enter investigation

RCMP have laid charges against four individuals following an investigation into a break-and-enter at a rural property near Lafleche. The incident was first reported to Gravelbourg RCMP on April 29, when it was discovered that someone had broken into a residence and stolen two firearms. 

The investigation led to the first charge being laid on June 5 against one man. Continued police work resulted in two others, a man and a woman, being charged on July 3. Police have since recovered the stolen firearms. 

Beavers win rain-shortened game against Swift Current

After a rough Alberta road trip that saw the team unable to pick up a win in six attempts, the Weyburn Beavers made their return to Tom Laing Park Sunday night. While rain and lightning would prompt an early end to the game after six innings, it was enough for the Beavers to get back in the win column with an 8-6 victory.

With so many great changes happening with the Weyburn Communithon, including a new board, the Weyburn Communithon Foundation Incorporated, something new and exciting is happening in the four months leading up to the big telethon event, this year being held on October 25th at the Weyburn Legion.

The new initiative not only puts the fun in fundraising, but it also brings together the 'tv' aspect of the ultra-Weyburn event, which is in its 44th year.

How to get involved with the Weyburn Arts Council

The Weyburn Arts Council is looking for an influx of new members to serve on the executive, as members-at-large, or as volunteers.

Acting Chair Tasha Hill said WAC on meets the third Wednesday of every month for an executive and members meeting, which is not open to the public. 

"If people are interested in joining the board, we are always looking for fresh faces, so they can definitely send us a message and we will give them the opportunity to come and spend the meeting with us and see what we're about."

NATO leaders — including Canada — have approved a plan to dramatically increase defence spending across the Western alliance to five per cent of gross domestic product over the next decade.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the move to five per cent of GDP — 3.5 per cent for core military spending and 1.5 per cent for defence-related infrastructure — will take place over the next 10 years.

Leisure Services Manager for the City of Weyburn, Amanda Wallace, said this year's event will include four time slots. 

One more day of Weyburn Fair Days

Today is the last day to take in the fun, food, and variety at the Weyburn Agricultural Society's 116th annual Weyburn Fair Days.

The gates open at 9 a.m., with the Souris River DQ Kids Rodeo. Vendors and the Canuck Amusements midway rides open today at 12 p.m.

Another rodeo performance will be taking place at 5:00 p.m., and a performance from Kelly Gill and the Hired Guns will close out the weekend.
