Name drop: Saskatchewan’s 2024 most popular baby names revealed
There’s been a shakeup in the world of baby names in Saskatchewan.
After nine years at the top, Olivia has finally been dethroned. Sophia takes over as the most popular name for girls in 2024, while Olivia settles into second place. Over on the boys’ side, Henry made a huge leap—from 18th place last year all the way to number one. That bump pushed Oliver down to second after holding the top spot in 2023.
Long-time favourites, Liam and Noah, are still going strong, holding onto the third and fourth spots for boys. Levi rounds out the top five.
Don't get ticked off: Protect yourself from tick bites
With temperatures warming up and more people heading outdoors, residents are once again reminded to keep an eye out for ticks.
Ticks can be found in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas. They can’t jump but typically grasp onto people and pets who brush up against them. Ticks are generally active from mid-April to late July.
Province introduces new changes to help enforce trespass law
The Government of Saskatchewan has passed new regulations which they say will help police to enforce trespass laws in businesses and public spaces.
With the new changes under the province's The Trespass to Property Amendment Regulations, 2025, activities including public intoxication and drug use will now be automatically considered trespassing in public spaces or businesses.
The reclassification allows police to immediately enforce the act against individuals causing public disturbance without seeking out information from owners and occupants of the premises.
Weyburn company recognized for excellence in excavation safety
The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) kicked off dig safe month at the beginning of April, launching into their province-wide campaign promoting safety and awareness around safe digging practices.
Part of this campaign is their 23 breakfast events held in communities across the province. They stopped in Weyburn yesterday at McKenna Hall, starting with a brief introduction and the presentation of one of three SaskEnergy Safe Digging Excellence Awards.
Keep it clear: WPS urge tree and hedge maintenance
With spring in bloom and trees budding, the Weyburn Police Service is reminding residents of the City of Weyburn bylaw regarding the maintenance of private trees and hedges.
The bylaw states that property owners are responsible for making sure trees and hedges are well maintained on the entirety of a property. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says this is to prevent physical or sight obstructions for vehicles, pedestrians, and emergency access.

Frieda Lillejord, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on April 23, 2025 at the age of 95 years.
