Hay salvage operations are set to start up soon, as some farmers are looking to get a bit of extra feed from roadsides.

In Saskatchewan, the season opens for everyone on July 8, with Alberta producers needing permits to cut along highways.

EPS introducing province-wide program to deter catalytic converter thefts

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has launched a new program to combat catalytic converter thefts. 

EPS has teamed up with Kal-Tire and AMA to bring in the ''Tag Your Cat' program which encourages drivers to have their catalytic converters engraved with the vehicle's VIN number as well as place a warning sticker for any potential thieves. 

"Engraving the VIN on your vehicle’s catalytic converter and having the warning decal visible will help deter thieves and reduce the chance of it being stolen," said EPS Superintendent Derek McIntyre. 

Leduc teenager facing drug trafficking charges

Leduc RCMP have charged a teenage man with drug trafficking after officers began an investigation in early June.

On June 21, police executed a search warrant in the Keystone Crescent area in Leduc. Police ended up seizing 2 ounces of cocaine, 3 ounces of a cutting agent, 10 grams of psilocybin, and over $400 in cash.

As a result, police have charged 18-year-old Frederick Warren Young, a resident of Leduc, with:

RCMP investigating multiple anti-LGBTQ2S+ incidents in St. Albert

St. Albert RCMP is asking the public for help in identifying the people involved in three separate incidents last week. 

The first incident took place on June 26 where two people, a man and a woman, were caught on camera placing material featuring anti-LGBTQ2S+ and anti-trans sentiment at the Joseph Demko School playground at about 8:20 p.m. 

Just 15 minutes later, those same people were spotted placing similar material at the Murial Martin School playground in Deer Ridge. 

Ardrossan's Sam Steel excited at opportunity with Dallas Stars

Ardrossan hockey player Sam Steel is excited to get going in his new NHL home. 

The 25-year-old forward recently signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars, a team Steel views as a Stanley Cup contender. 

"They are obviously a really good team, you see what they have done in the last few years, and it seems like they are close to achieving the ultimate goal," said Steel. "It's an exciting feeling knowing you are going to an organization that is highly regarded and is a contender." 

Federal government looking for members to apply for Food Policy Advisory Council

The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, has launched a new recruitment process for membership in the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council.

The Council was created as part of a commitment in 2019 to support greater collaboration in understanding complex and interconnected food systems issues from diverse perspectives to make meaningful and sustainable progress.

It provides advice to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food on addressing challenges and opportunities across Canada’s food systems.

Fort Sask Piranhas representing Alberta at the North American Indigenous Games

Two members of the Piranhas Swim Club of Fort Saskatchewan will be representing Alberta on the national stage next week.

13-year-old Grace Laybourne and 14-year-old Hudson Charron will be swimming at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games, hosted in Halifax from July 15 to 23.

Laybourne and Charron have been friends since kindergarten, and both of them picked up swimming at a young age.

"My sister started competitive swimming one year before me, and I just really liked watching her. I joined the Piranhas when I was about five," said Laybourne.

Portion of River Road will permanently close this month

A portion of Fort Saskatchewan's River Road will permanently close to vehicle traffic later this month. 

The city announced that the section north of the Lion's Campground entrance all the way up to 119 street will close to traffic on July 26. 

This move was initially announced back in March as the city was had various concerns ranging from road damage to reckless driving. 

Excessive rain back in 2017 caused a portion of the road to collapse. 

New Strathcona County agricultural complex to begin construction this summer

Construction is set to begin this summer for a new agricultural complex in Strathcona County. 

The $67.6 million Pointe-aux-Pins Acres project is expected to break ground on August 1. 

“Pointe-aux-Pins Acres celebrates the rural agricultural advantage Strathcona County uniquely owns,” said Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank. “We have taken the time to listen carefully to design a space that meets a variety of hosting needs."
