Viragos open new season with plenty to show for strong efforts
The U18 Kinettes Viragos football team began their season over the weekend, taking on a team in a match to get the team going. Matthew McGillivray, the head coach of the Viragos, says the trip was long but worth it.
"We drove up to Swan River, the long drive of five hours, but the girls seemed to enjoy it. They enjoy the bus and band trips, so they enjoyed the time bonding with each other there."
Local wins bronze medal at national pickleball championships
Wymark's Sally Wiens made the most of a last-minute pickleball partnership on the national stage.
An injury to Janet Simpson's normal partner opened the door for Wiens to compete at Winnipeg's 2025 Myoflex National Championship, with the newly formed pair winning bronze on Saturday in the women's doubles 65 and above age category..
"We hadn't really ever played together before, and I think we got three hours of play time before nationals," she said. "We struggled initially but found a way to get to the medal round."

55+ Summer Games open today in Swift Current
It's opening day of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness 55+ Provincial Games in Swift Current.
"It's exciting," said Chair of the local organizing Teagan Gader. "We've had lots come in and register. Everyone is very excited."
Gader anticipates having approximately 370 participants and 50 guests in Swift Current for the games.

Portage players medal at pickleball nationals
The 2025 National Pickleball Championship has wrapped up in Winnipeg, and at least one competitor from Portage is returning home with a bronze medal.
This year’s nationals, held August 19–24 at the Taylor Tennis Centre, drew more than 700 athletes from across the country. It took about 250 volunteers to run the week-long tournament, which featured skill and age-specific doubles and singles play in junior, para, men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions.
Sue Davidson, vice-president of Pickleball Manitoba and a member of the Portage Pickleball Club, took part in five events.
Registration and sponsorships open with the Weyburn Skating Club for the 2025-2026 season
It won’t be long until the snow flies and the ice freezes here in Weyburn, and the Weyburn Skating Club are getting ready for another fun year on the ice. Throughout the winter months, the skating club will help kids here in Weyburn sharpen their skating skills and registration is open for those interested. Diana Hay, marketing coordinator with the Weyburn Skating Club, says there’s programs for all levels of skaters.
Fines, Hooper help lead Canadian charge at U20 Worlds
Cochrane Cowboy Wrestling Club alumni Annika Fines and Nick Hooper were among Canada’s top performers at the 2025 U20 World Wrestling Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, Aug. 17-21.
Fines was Canada’s second-highest-placing female wrestler, finishing eighth in the women’s 62-kilogram freestyle category. Hooper was the second-best Canadian on the men’s side, placing 12th in the 74-kilogram division.
Local athletes wrap up Canada Summer Games
19 local athletes are returning home from Newfoundland after participating in the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
The games wrapped up with the closing ceremony yesterday.
Saskatchewan finished 6th in total medals with 48.
Two of those medals involved southwest athletes.
Chinook crowns Ladies Club Champion
Allison Girardeau is the 2025 Chinook Ladies Club Champion.
Girardeau sank a 30-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole to secure a one-shot victory.
She scored an 80, while Sandra Dyck finished just a stroke behind with an 81 in a field of 49 golfers.
