Portage cousins represent at Canada Games in Newfoundland

Two athletes from Portage la Prairie proudly represented Team Manitoba at the 2025 Canada Summer Games, in Newfoundland, and even more notably, they are cousins.

Kaj Willms, 15, played with Manitoba’s U17 basketball team, while his cousin, Soren Weselake, competed in both men's road and mountain biking events. Their parallel journeys to Newfoundland showcased not only athletic talent, but also a strong sense of community, determination, and sportsmanship.

Hockey Manitoba terminates executive director

Hockey Manitoba has parted ways with its longtime executive director.

The announcement was made Thursday, stating that Peter Woods had been let go effective August 15.

"We wish him the best in his future endeavours," said Hockey Manitoba.

Peter Woods has held the position since 2001.

Hockey Manitoba did not give a reason for Woods' termination. The organization says the Board of Directors will provide their membership with an update on the path forward in the coming weeks.

Red Deer athletes fuel Alberta’s Canada Games push for medals

Athletes from Red Deer are helping push Team Alberta into medal contention at the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

In men’s volleyball, Alberta advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 pool record and will face Newfoundland on Friday (August 22).

Red Deer’s Tyson DeZutter, who recently represented Canada at the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship in Uzbekistan, is among six players on the roster with national-level experience.

Agra Risk Wheatland Kings unveil improved dressing room

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings unveiled their renovated dressing room ahead of the start of the regular season. 

The room was unveiled at an anticipated private event on Wednesday (Aug. 20) at the Strathmore Family Centre, where Kings staff invited sponsors to see the new room.

"We poured a pretty heavy amount of capital into our facilities here at the family centre to ultimately build a new home for our hockey family," said Cody Holdaway, general manager of the Kings.

Michel, Weyburn pipeline fuels Mounties' hopes for 2025 football season

As the Mount Allison Mounties prepare to kick off their 2025 season Saturday, the focus is squarely on the future. After a difficult 2024 campaign that saw the team finish with a 1-7 record, the storied program is looking to bounce back. At the heart of the team's leadership group is a player well-known to football fans in southeastern Saskatchewan: Weyburn’s Ben Michel.    

Strong start for Saskatchewan teams at National Baseball Championships

It was a good day on Thursday for the Saskatchewan teams at the National Baseball Championships in Regina.

Team Saskatchewan opened the day with a 4-3 win over Quebec.

Joel Bauml had two hits and an RBI, while Tom Hooker had a hit and an RBI

In the late game, the Regina Trappers beat Nova Scotia 7-1.

Cole Bauml had two hits and drove in two runs.

Today Saskatchewan takes on Ontario at 10:00 am and the Regina Trappers meet Manitoba at 7:00 pm

Canada Summer Games: Saskatchewan Women's Baseball and Volleyball teams head to quarterfinals

Team Saskatchewan's Women's Baseball team suffered their first loss at the Canada Summer Games on Thursday.

Nova Scotia beat Saskatchewan 9-7.

Humboldt's Camden Suchan got the start for Saskatchewan,

She pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 earned runs on 11 hits and had 7 strikeouts. 

Suchan also had a hit and a walk at the plate.

Saskatchewan will now meet Ontario in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning.

In Women's Volleyball

Saskatchewan completed a perfect round robin beating Manitoba 3-2. (23-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13).

Sports Round-Up: Friday, Aug. 22

Team Sask's Lila Stewart struck gold again in diving, taking top place in the women’s 1m springboard event. This follows Tuesday’s gold medal in artistic and yesterday’s bronze in 3m springboard.

Team Sask heads into Day 14 of competition with 11 medals total -- 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze.

Big day ahead for local athletes as Summer Games enters Friday competition

Team Sask entered Friday with 11 medals (3 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze) at the Canada Summer Games in St John's, Newfoundland.

The latest tally came on Thursday night when Lila Stewart struck gold for the second time in diving, taking top place in the women’s 1m Springboard event. The medal followed up Stewart's gold medal performance in Artistic back on Tuesday, and a bronze medal in 3 metre springboards on Wednesday.
