Airdrie Techmation Thunder spotlight of the week: Jaivir Kaler
This week's Airdrie Techmation Thunder Spotlight belongs to Jaivir Kaler.
The Thunder won both of their games on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, they knocked off the Three Hills Thrashers 5-1, and after facing plenty of adversity on Saturday, they beat the Rocky Rams 4-2. On the season, Airdrie now has a record of six wins and five losses.
Head Coach and General Manager Mark Kulynych wrote that Kaler played his best game Friday.
Gushue, Homan look to remain undefeated in round-robin play
Team Canada's Rachel Homan secured her playoff spot Wednesday at the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Lacombe with wins over Mexico (10-1) and South Korea (8-2).
On the men's side, Brad Gushue's rink defeated Australia 13-8.
Gushue and Homan are both 6-0 heading into play Thursday and will be competing in the playoffs.
To wrap up the round-robin, Gushue takes on China this morning at 9 a.m. with Homan facing Japan this afternoon at 2 p.m.
Sports Update - Thursday, October 31st
The Southwest Cougars are riding a seven-game win streak. The Cougars scored five first period goals en route to an 8-2 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs Wednesday night in Souris. Connor Hoemsen had a hat trick and Lynden Gould had a goal and three assists for Southwest. Slater Anderson, Eric Berger, Spencer Cullen and Taylor Lockhart also scored for the Cougars who went 9-1 in October. Southwest netminder Brodie Cameron made 33 saves.
Sports Update - Thursday, October 31st
Steinbach Regional gave up 21 first half points and lost 29-21 to the Vincent Massey Vikings in the Winnipeg High School Football League's JV9 semifinal at East Side Eagles field. Owen Medeiros took a screen pass 97 yards for the Sabres first touchdown. Pavel Tsialipka scored on a six-yard run early in the third quarter and Kaynen Hruda caught a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter for Steinbach Regional's final major of the season.
U15 AA Broncos saying thanks to the community by helping the Food Bank
Besides candy for the trick or treaters, residents in Humboldt can also hand out some non-perishable food items tonight.
The U15 AA Humboldt Broncos team will be canvassing the community collecting food items for the Humboldt Food Bank.
Captain Kash Elke says the food drive is a way to say thanks to the community for the support the hockey team receives.
Sports Update - Thursday, October 31st
The Pembina Valley Hawks dropped a 3-2 decision to Interlake Wednesday night in Teulon. Blake Farthing scored the shootout winner for the Lightning. Casey Magarrell and Haiden Friesen did the goal scoring for the Hawks. Friesen's seventh of the season with 51 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 2-2.
Swift Current wins first Wildcats Fall Classic
A win in their home tournament for the female U18 AA Swift Current Full Like Ag Wildcats.
They won the first ever Wildcats Fall Classic beating the Sherwood Park Fury 4-2 in the final.
The Wildcats also had wins against the Western Prairie Thunder and Lumsden Lynx. Swift Current tied the Red Deer Acura Chiefs during round robin play.
Swift Current defenceman Serena Kochan earned a spot on the tournament all-star team.
The Wildcats host the North East Aces on Saturday, before visiting Regina on Sunday.
Make it 6 in a row as the Terriers take down the Blues
The Portage Terriers shook off a sluggish start and rallied to claim a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Blues on Wednesday night at Stride Place, led by an electric two-goal performance from forward Cam Bullinger.
The opening period was punctuated by penalties, with five minors called, four against Winnipeg alone. Despite the Terriers dominating possession and outshooting the Blues 14-4, it was Winnipeg who struck first, with Nikolas Iafrate finding the back of the net, snapping a shot past Terriers goalie Ryan Velan.
