10-year-old Colton Mateychuk dazzles at Brick Tournament in Edmonton

Playmaking sensation Colton Mateychuk was part of a spring hockey team that competed in the Brick Tournament in Edmonton, and the assist wizard says he had a great time on and off the ice.

Starting in hockey at a pretty young age, "I was four," Mateychuk says proudly about when he first got onto skates, the young star remembers it took little time for him to fall in love with the game. "I remember I just loved skating and scoring goals," he says with a big smile.

Sonic split games in Moose Jaw

A split of two games by the Swift Current U17 Sonic in softball action yesterday.

Bree Pavely had 3 hits and 6 RBIs for Swift Current against Moose Jaw, but they fell 19-10 to the 17U Ice.

The Sonic beat Wood River 17-1 in their other game last night.

Serena Kochun led the way, going 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

The Sonic host Kindersley for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm on Saturday.

Local dancer finishes 4th at national event

A local dancer found the national spotlight in Niagra Falls.

16-year-old Blake Johnson competed recently at the Tarpsichore national top dancer title competition.

She made it to nationals by winning the provincial event. 

"It felt amazing," Johnson said. "I was super excited. I never thought something like that would happen, so I was just very proud."

Beavers fans to flood the stands as Jamie Campbell comes to Tom Laing Park

Whether you’re a season ticket holder or have never seen the inside of a ball diamond, the Weyburn Beavers Baseball Club is inviting the whole community to pack the park at Thursday night’s game against the Saskatoon Berries. 

Club president Garnet Hansen says the drive to fill the stands comes from the addition of a special guest to the stands – Sportsnet Central baseball analyst Jamie Campbell.    

Berries split with Moose Jaw, move to 6-2 in July

The Saskatoon Berries won four straight games to start July, including a 22-4 drubbing of the Weyburn Beavers on July 3, but have since cooled down a bit going 2-2 in their last four games.

The Berries lost on Saturday at home 6-4 against the Regina Red Sox but returned the favour on Sunday with a 7-5 win on the road. The team stayed hot Monday as the Berries beat the Moose Jaw Miller Express in walk-off fashion 4-3, but then their modest two game win-streak ended Tuesday night with Moose Jaw turning in a one-run-win of their own 9-8 from Cairns Field. 

Athletics power past 15U AAA Dodgers 9-4

The East Central 15U AAA Dodgers were defeated by the Regina Athletics 9-4 in a game held in Watrous on Tuesday night.  

Regina jumped out to an early advantage, scoring five runs through the first three innings.  

The Dodgers responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Athletics extended their advantage to 9-1 before East Central added three runs in their final at-bat.  

Good times roll at senior ball tournament

The annual Senior Slo-pitch Tournament is in full swing at Republic of Manitobah Park in Portage la Prairie, with nine teams taking the field over two days of friendly but spirited competition.

Games began Tuesday, with players returning Wednesday to wrap up the tournament. The event features multiple divisions and draws slo-pitch enthusiasts from across the region.

Coach Robinson says the tournament has become a yearly tradition that continues to bring players together.

Final round underway at Junior Boys and Girls Championships at Quarry Oaks

It's going to be a big day at Quarry Oaks as the final round of the Junior Boys and Girls Championships are underway.

Golf lovers are encouraged to head down any time today to check out the third and final day of action. 

Players from across the province are already out on the course with the leaders set to tee off coming up in the early afternoon.

Miller Express end losing skid with comeback win over Berries

The Moose Jaw Miller Express came from behind to defeat the Saskatoon Berries 9–8 on Tuesday night, snapping a four-game losing skid. 

Moose Jaw opened the scoring in the top of the first, with an Eduardo Saenz single to drive in Thomas Soto and William Edwards. However, Saskatoon responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
